we were in the Bohne und Malz Herzogspitalstrasse (Karlsplatz) on a saturday night for a drink. Good place to go, if you don't wanna have a big party night. It seems kind of qiet enough for a chat although it is very hard to get a seat or even a table. They have a bar in there but it is not very big. Most of the bar's life is at tables, like most German bars :-)The atmosphere in there is really nice, it has kind of a cozy touch although the interior isn't old or old fashioned. The service is excellent and so are the cocktails, they have a big variety of cocktails and wines. The people in there mostly 20 and 35 I guess and well dressed but not posh. They close around one, so it is still enough time to party hard after the easy warm up, as ur not willing to go home after Bohne & Malz. I'd definitely recommend it.

Are you joking? This was the crappiest place I'd ever been to in Munich. I mean, I'm good looking, my date had money and we were ready for some coffee and excellent-looking cake, but I guess that Saturday afternoon they only had eyes for themselves cause we sat and waited for 20 minutes, got no menu, no hello, no look our way. It was so f**king crowded and they had two waitresses! Hello! There was another couple who left too and I noticed quite a few other parties who waited just as long as we did. Suckers for staying. Oh, i should add, this one we went to was at Marienplatz.

Fully agree with Ella on that point. The service there was bad even by the typically low standards in Munich.

Ella, maybe it was your "good looking", "wealthy" arrogance that caused them to decide to let you stew for a while.

Ella, sorry to hear that. As I said we were in karlsplatz, and the service was good. I don't know how good looking you are but I don't think they only served me cause they felt sympathie with me cause i am bleeding ugly. i still can recommend Karlsplatz

I suppose it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the 2 branches have different levels of service. I'll have to pop into the one on Karlsplatz to see what it's like. Incidentally, after being disappointed at B&M we went to Tizian where the service was excellent.

I notice that the branch on Weinstrasse is currently closed for refurbishment. They'll be open again January 2005. So don't do what I did and plan to meet someone there for a Saturday morning coffee! If your pal is late you'll be standing around like a mug, outside in the cold. Brrrr!

was there once on a friday November 2005 evening (in the sonnenstraße one). It was full, decoration rather nice but overpriced middle quality food and poor service ...

Been to the Sonnenstrasse branch a few times. Food was alright, but they manage to make a bl***y strong caipi or whisky sour. Almost knocked me off my chair.

Bohne & Malz now have a new branch at Rotkreuzplatz, Neuhausen - in the old Hypovereinsbank building. Nice lighting, huge place, can also sit outside - I'm looking forward to trying their brunch sometime.

Went to the Stachus branch on a Friday night and enjoyed it. Nice ambiance but not too stuck-up. The service was acceptable. They obviously spent quite a few euros on the interior, and that makes it a nice place to spend an hour or two in. Since there aren't many nice places around Hauptbahnhof/Stachus to get food or drink in, this is certainly a place I'd head to again.

Re: the new Bohne & Malz at Rotkreuzplatz Not at all child friendly! When we went in with a baby buggy, they all rolled their eyes at us. There is the worlds smokiest non-smoking section ..They are stuck up as can be...did not give change, just assumed a tip and kept a euro...service was so bad, we refused to leave a tip at all and were scolded when we corrected her assumtion. Will never go to that crap place again!!!
