The Backspielhaus is a chain of bakeries/cafés around Munich. They have a couple in Schwabing, Haidhausen, Neuhausen, and elsewhere. In December 2003 a new one was opened one block north of Odeonsplatz. This is by far the most upmarket. Beautiful interior. Good for a quiet civilised coffee or pils.

I like it! I like it a lot. As you say, very civilised. Bright lighting, the highest ceiling in the world ever, polished marble and silverworks, waiters in crisp white tunics. And don't forget the huge renaissance art on the wall! Yes, most of the people here are old, monied, and aloof. But ignore them. Come here with a friend or two and enjoy the setting!
