Bavaria at it's best, as far as the Oktoberfest-like atmosphere is concerned. And - opposite to many similar places located in the city center - it's not overpopulated by tourists. Unfortunately I found the food really disappointing. Low level Biergarten stuff, I would say.

I have to disagree. I like the place a lot. The prices are lower than any other bavarian places (0.5 L Augustiner 2,50 euro versus 3,00). During the week, they have food specials ranging from 3-6 euros, plus all the typical fare. The place is full or blue-collar workers (probably from the adjacent brewery) during the week, taking advantage of the prices. It is not schick, but I appreciate seeing how people actually live in this city, and it's nice to get out of schwabing.

i also like it. I only said the food was disappointing. Maybe i was unlucky. I have to admit, everybody in my group thought the food was disappointing. We had a cold "Brozeit" and "Schweinebraten". But the atmosphere was lively, the beer (Augustiner of course) tastes perfect and the waitresses are typical Bavaria-Friendly (and wearing nice Dirndls)...

i had one of the best times since i came to munich in this place. at first service was surly, but got much better as the night went on and our waitress had a chance to size us up as not so bad (initially she told us our table was reserved for an hour later, but when we got up to leave at the appointed time, she very graciously told us we were welcome to stay). plus, they were sweet as can be to my doggie. at one point the chef came out and presented him with a schweinshaxe. very charming. really fun day. not so good the next morning though.

This is my favorite place in all of Munich for Bavarian cuisine and, of course, a fantastic beer or several. I've been living here for 6 1/2 years and know a thing or three about all things Bavarian. But don't take my word for it - ask a native of Munich what they think about the Bräustüberl next to the brewery (NOT to be confused with the Augustiner Keller, which is [in]famous for its large beer garden and is NORTH of the S-Bahn tracks which cut west-east through downtown). If you haven't been to the Bräustüberl, what on Earth are you waiting for?! P.S. Drink an Edelstoff for me!

The times I have been there I thought the food was disappointing. I thought the beer was disappointing as well, even though this is where they make the stuff.

And, I forgot to add, the service has ranged from poor to rude when I have been there. But then, this is Germany.

Value for money is excellent. But don't expect Schubeck style gourmet meals for 6 €. In my opinion, most authentic Bavarian Place (which includes "rude but friendly" service)in Munich.

To put it simply, The Hofbrauhaus is the legend, Augustiner is the fact.

we've just been here for lunch. the menu is really good value, with some cheap specials; half a chicken for €5,55 today! excellent service, our waiter was really friendly and prompt. when the food came the cook came out to ask us if it was good, and the waiter also came to check we were happy with everything. hearty portions too! great atmosphere, very authentic I'd say, and they also have menus in English, just ask!
