Atlas - Innere Wienerstr. 2, 81667 Munich, Germany
Atlas is owned by the same people who run News Bar, Roma and now Odeon too, and one of its best features is the big Terrasse, surrounded by a glass wall that acts as a wind and noise break, which makes it a superb sunny candidate for a summery lunch date or autumnal coffee.
When the snow covers the city (it happens, you'll see), we recommend you check inside. The place is a fair size and I have not yet seen it packed, although it is always busy. It is ideally located if you have just seen the latest Hollywood must-see at the nearby movie theatre, the slightly weird Museum Lichtspiel, or a concert at the Muffathalle or Gasteig.

I really like the food here and it's pretty reasonably priced, it's a great location too, which is why its such a shame that the service is absolutely dreadful, even by German standards. Everyones food comes at different times, sometimes starters arrive either with or after the main course and you could probably get through reading most of War & Peace while waiting for the bill. Most times Ive been there the waitresses have been stroppy, I was there recently and we got a bollocking from the waitress for asking for an extra knife, she actually told us that shed given us our cutlery allowance. If you go, go when its quiet, and definitely avoid weekends.
Posted by: LFF at 5:18 pm on 26.Oct.2004I second that...have been there twice in recent months and whilst the food is amazing and good value, the service is rubbish. So I´d also say go there at quieter times, it´s definitely worth a visit. The breakfasts are yummy too.
Posted by: "Joanna" at 9:09 pm on 26.Oct.2004Breakfasts are great but have you ever stopped to notice the serving staff puffing away on their cigarettes whilst serving, leaving them to burn at the corner of the bar when they are serving the tables @@@@ yuk @!!!!!
Posted by: "fag endz staff" at 9:43 pm on 26.Oct.2004heartily agree, i was there with my friends baby and the waitress, who'd obviously just had a quick ciggy, came to our blew smoke all over the baby - disgusting. I don't mind it at all late at night in an already smoky pub, but this was 11am, and outdoors. Perhaps all the ciggy breaks explains why the service takes so long?
Posted by: "fran" at 9:12 am on 27.Oct.2004I used to live down the street from Atlas and stopped going because of the HORRENDOUS service. And that was more than a year ago, so obviously nothing has changed. Two thumbs down, too bad because it could be a great spot...
Posted by: "tim" at 10:00 am on 28.Oct.2004I just went to cafe atlas recently, I wish I'd read your reviews first - could not agree about the bad service more. The waitress we had serving our table had so much attitude it was almost funny. She pointedly ignored us most of the time, got 2 parts of a 4 part order wrong (which of course she didn't even apologise for). She seemed to spend most of the time chatting and smoking with the other waitresses at the bar. When she did deign to come serve our table, she was so rude, the only time she tried to be friendly was when we were handing over our cash, as she was obviously hoping for a nice tip - awful. I've been in resturants, even in Munich, that have had twice the business this place had, with half the staff, and had no worries.
Posted by: "reggie" at 9:44 am on 8.Nov.2004Remember, if the service is that bad - DON'T TIP at all. They soon get the point :-))
Posted by: "shiteservice" at 9:48 am on 8.Nov.2004I completly agree with lots of you commenting on the horrible service. I often went there since I live near and it´s spacy inside and it IS indeed nice to look out the terrace when it´s snowing, but how they treat customers made me stay away from it forever. Sure I tried not to tip them, but they just don´t change. My last visit was when one of the waitresses told me that I should use my astray properly. I asked myself what´s the use of having an astray in front of you if you´re supposed to keep it clean?::<
Posted by: "Nina" at 4:33 pm on 10.Mar.2005in my experience, seems a bit hit and miss with service there....took my mum there a few weeks back and the same waitress who'd been gobby the last time treated us amazingly. it was very quiet in there that day though which probably explains it. it's not my first choice of place to go for brunch though...I usually go to Odeon...great service and a huge breakfast menu. yum.
Posted by: Moonboot at 5:43 pm on 10.Mar.2005Waitress thinks : Quiet day = no punters = no tips = more fags to smoke while I have nothing to do. Waitress says : On shite, no punters, no tips, need to be nice today, but still smoke as many fags as I can without being spotted. Waitress does : Still treat the punters like shite, smoke like a chimmney and hope I can get off work early in time for a evening at Pacha !
Posted by: "the Boss" at 10:10 pm on 10.Mar.2005Think I'll print this and run it over to them. I'll stop at Cafe Wienerplatz along the way - same owners, same crap service staff.
Posted by: "dudette" at 10:18 pm on 11.Mar.2005I had an excellent bacon cheeseburger there. The patio outside was full of smokers. The food took a while to arrive, but the service was fine.
Posted by: randy at 5:27 pm on 10.Oct.2005went there a few weeks ago with my Oktoberfest visitors for breakfast on a Sunday...'damn it' I thought as I sat down cuz we had the same horrible waitress as last time. nothing has changed. she forgot our bread basket; as I ordered it she said to me 'if I forget it remind me' (wtf??) I did remind her and she got arsey and still never brought it. after breakfast we ordered 2 portions of pancakes, one came after 10 minutes, the other after half an hour. my coffee was forgotten despite a few reminders. as soon as we asked for the bill the waitress got sickly sweet...sorry for this sorry for that type thing. but we didn't tip. she minged of cigarettes too which is really off-putting. not going back there again.
Posted by: Moonboot at 9:54 am on 11.Oct.2005I live beside this restaurant and have to say I have always found the staff to be 'exceptionally' pleasant, polite and friendly. I eat out a lot and have not found a place I feel more comfortable in. The previous posts have been quite scathing but for me Atlas remains the one place in Munich I can trust for a warm reception, great food and friendly communicative staff. My opinion is not based on one or two visits but as a regular customer frequently eating there. I would recommend a visit here wholeheartedly.
Posted by: "Will2Write" at 11:23 am on 27.Apr.2006its true the service and the whole athmosphere have changed for the better. New owners, newly decorated and very pleasent. a deffinant plus
Posted by: "sandra" at 12:52 am on 30.Jun.2006i didn't try it before, so i can't compare the old management with the new (remember it was part of the chain "Berben-Lewy", not known for the best service in town). anyway, breakfast was good but nothing special, the service was attentive.
Posted by: "The Inspector" at 9:34 am on 4.Sep.2006We went there yesterday for brunch. We waited hours for our food. It took them 1,5 hour to bring me my pancake and another 10 minutes for the maple syrup. The staff is friendly but the place is horribly managed! We're never going back again.
Posted by: Naz at 11:00 am on 24.Sep.2007went here yesterday for brunch (my friend's choice) and I have to say the service was so attentive. all 3 service staff paid a lot of attention to us and made sure our table was cleared, they asked us (five mins after our food was brought) if everything was okay, and we were continually asked if we had any further orders. the menu has changed from the last time I was there. the brunch menu was quite varied. after much deliberation we chose the Greek brunch for 8,90€ which was a huge pitta bread laden with grilled feta, spinach, herbs, and tomato, and a huge fresh-fruit-salad yoghurt bowl topped with walnuts and honey. they have redeemed themselves in my opinion and we'll definitely be going back.
