Hertie is the name of a chain of department stores that was founded in 1882. A century later, it was purchased by the Karstadt group and the brand has undergone considerable change.
In Munich, the name Hertie was, for over a century, associated with the huge department store in Munich opposite Hauptbahnhof. In September 2007 it changed its name to Karstadt, although there were no other significant changes to the store itself.
The name Hertie is now given to the smaller stores that were previously known as "Karstadt Kompakt", and comes with a new, gay logo.
