Work permits for U.S. citizens in Germany

Hello everyone,

I am currently applying for Aufenthaltserlaubnis and I was told by the KVR that I needed Krankenversiche and Rentenversicher. I am a U.S. Citizen here on my passport and have all ready regestered that I am living in Munich at the KVR. I already have a job lined up. Its freelance work, but pays well and will supply me a substantial income.

I went to an Allianz and spoke with a gentleman there and he was ready to sell me insurance, but what are my options, i.e. who is the cheapest or can I get private or state.
I also went to 2 banks, a Dresdner Bank where I was told I could not open a Rentenversicher unless I had residence.
The other banks was a Deutsche Bank and they said they could provide me with a private Krankenversiche and private Rentenversicher, but that the KVR was wanting me to get the state sponsered versions of those kind of accounts. My employer cannot get those for me because I am doing freelance work and also they do not know how. This is all a shock to them.

On wednesday I am going to the U.S. Embassy to ask what I need to get and how. I hope to get some aid there.

I just need some clarity on what kind of accounts or insurances I need and perhaps some direction on where to go to get it.
