Well I hardly believe the eye test is for free, it's just that AOK pays for it.

Other than that, you can get your eye sight tested at every optician (isn't that what they're there for?), and should you decide to buy a pair of expensive glasses it typically will be for free

Dr. Bauman by Marienplatz takes AOK and he is an actual ophthamologist reccomended by other TT's. You only pay the 10E per quarter payment.

You Krankenkasse will pay for a full eye test at a doctor.

An optician will meassure your eyes for glasses for free when you buy glasses from them. I personally go to Fielmann for my glasses, low prices. Remember the krankenkasse now pays NOTHING towards glasses.

And Fielmann have a €10 insurance option now so your next glasses are replaced for free... just a shame they don't have more fancy glasses.

Might replace these crappy Peruvian jobbies there though, they're all scratched

Can you explain the E10 insurance glasses more, would that be from AOK too?

You pay 10 Euro each year to Fielmann/Hanse-Merkur and get new glasses every two years in return, unless your eyesight changes or the glasses break, then you get a replacement immediately.

I know there are several threads on this - I have been through them and not found the info I need or if I did find something relevant is was 3 years old...

I have very bad eye-sight (-17.5, -16.5) and stigmatism to boot. Plus my German is minimal.
So I really need a good eye-specialist who speaks English well.
It would be a bonus if he/she were based in the vicinity of Marienplatz ..!

Can anyone recommend a good optician based on recent experience?
