i am so flustered, by how many jerks sit on here and wait for the chance to attempt to belittle, humiliate, and defile people. Do you have nothing better to do with your time. If someone has a question, how about shutting your mouth unless you have something condusive to add.

p.s. Defile - "to violate the chastity of". I think a few peeps do indeed fit into that category.

@SereneJean1
OK, I apologise for busting your chops but actually you have to understand how TT works.
A normal thread with something like "I have a package stuck at customs" is simply gonna get ignored. Frankly most people are, with all due respect, not very interested - seen it all before. Naughty sarcastic little buggers like me, (and others) actually keep the thread bouncing and you will notice that something like 1 in 3 of the postings actually has the information you require. More people that read the thread, better your chance of some sympathy and a proper response - which is what you got in the end.
So, just go with the ribbing, and pick out the information you require.
Serenajean1
Jun 13 2008, 2:21 pm
Well technically I am sure there are many people who would like to defile, or violate the chastity of others on here. So in theory it applies, just not in ocntext. LOL.

It might also help if you understood that when you post a query about customs, considering that no one on TT is likely to be an employee of the Zollamt who could give you a 100% definitive answer, you should expect the reasonable response of 'call or go speak to customs directly'. Maybe it's not an ideal answer, but I certainly don't understand how making that suggestion is 'defiling' you.

Maybe your problem is you presented easily solvable problems as intractable, and then mocked those who, admittedly with some tongue in cheek, pointed that out.
You post was basically:
"I have a question about importing a shipment through customs"
"Just go down to customs, they'll help you out"
"I can't, my shoes aren't tied"

QUOTE (kellyl @ Jun 12 2008, 9:41 pm)

I'm starting to come to the opinion that there are some rather unhelpful people responding to posts on this website. A person new to the website requests help summarising other topics and gets more posts about searching and getting other people to do their work than helpful friendly empathy. Why bother posting at all if you aren't going to help in a positive way!
A new person comes along requesting help summarising other topics...why don't they do it themselves? Make a bit of effort to use the information which others have graciously provided in the past. If I have answered someones questions previously it is pretty fucking insulting to come along and just expect me to do it again. Why should I bother offering up the benefit of my infinite wisdom if I am only going to have to do the same over and over because some are too stupid or lazy to do a little leg-work of their own.

Fair enough Keydeck, but sometimes the 50+ posts don't necessarily answer fully (I had this situation when asking about my UK driver's license). If you don't want to reply, don't reply... There may be someone else out there who is willing to make the contact and provide the info, and maybe add info to the issue, which I did yesterday with the post that I felt some people were quite rude in.
I thought this was supposed to be a friendly, helpful site for people moving to a foreign country - somewhere to provide/seek support and make friends. Sometimes I wonder whether this is always the case.

The next big city, eh? So possibly a place with more than 2000 people, one of whom is probably able to string together a word or two of English combined with enough German to discuss your care package with the Zoll.

Of course it isn't always the case! Are people always helpful, supportive and friendly in real life? No! TT is (mostly) a reflection of the real world; despite being euphemistically named 'Toytown', it's just a little slice of reality with all its nice and nasty aspects.
Having said that, TT can be fantastically helpful if you're big enough to get over a few silly jibes. There's a lot of knowledge here, it just sometimes comes in bitter pill form. Learn to swallow and smile.

Not necessarily. It's a website for "Germany's English-speaking crowd". Many of us have been here a long, long time. Helping newcomers is just a by-product of the site.

Allegedly being British, kellyl has ruined my almost-perfect theory that it's only female Americans who get upset because a naughty boy in the interweb hasn't taken her helpless and self-pitying post seriously.
Anyway, 90% of all questions posted on Toytown should be rejected for one of the following three reasons:
- The information has already been posted. Stop being so self-centred as to expect people to spend time rewriting their responses just for you.
- No-one is going to know the answer. Contact the relevant department and get an accurate answer.
- You can find the information on Google within about 15-20 seconds.
Toytown has an enormous wealth of information in its archives, and serious questions are treated as such. But if someone asks, for example, if anyone can recommend a health-insurance provider, then they deserve all the ridicule they get. Is it possible for this forum to have existed for over six years without that question having already been asked a million times before?
And while I'm on a roll, why do these people expect others to help them when they themselves contribute nothing to the forum or the website? Toytown is a chat forum for expats to bitch and moan. Helping newcomers is NOT something that people are obliged to spend their time on.
