Sheep's Cold - cold days in June (Schafskälte)

A metereological phenomenon peculiar to Germany

A Schafskälte is a weather phenomenon peculiar to Germany.

These "sheep's cold" spells can result in a temperature drop of 5° to 10°C during the period between June 4 to June 18 (most often around June 11).

The name comes from the risk to freshly shorn sheep from the unusually cold weather.

WetterOnline shows the current temperatures in Germany to be under 15°C. Compare this to last week when we were occasionally topping 30°C.

See also the TT topic about Eisheiligen (Ice Saints), a similar cold spell in mid-May.

I am sure a nice "warm cuddly hug" from any Taffies round here will make the sheep feel better!!

Are you listening OG??

This freshly shorn sheep is not looking forward to his works summer party now. I may well regret going for the shorter than normal haircut.

I think this happened about the same time last year? I remember my aunt and uncle came over and there was fresh snow on the higher peaks of the alps around now?

I always thought it was a birthday phenomenon sad.gif. But yeah - June and crap weather in Bavaria go together.

one nice thing is that the bug population has gone back quite a bit in my apartment, but man was it hard getting up this morning. it rained all night and i must gone into some kind of really deep sleep, it was unreal.

I don't think it's just here, Wimbledon starts in just over a week and it always rains when Wimbledon is on!

It rains most of the time when I go to the schwäbische Alb on flying holidays. Beware the 2.5 weeks starting 24th July!

It was bloody freezing last night! I even put the heating back on.

This is probably why I am now suffering from a stinking cold. First hot weather - then cold. grr!
angelbeast
kate you are not the only one... i am also suffering from cold.
Kazalphaville
And me. It's even developed into bronchitis.

On the plus side, it meant I could wear my favorite boots and a viscose wrap dress last night, one more time before putting them away w/ winter clothing.

Any chance you can change the date of your holiday? I'm getting married on the 8th of August - would LOVE to not have rain on my wedding day. wink.gif
