Hey all ,
Iknow this as come up in the past but in seems so long ago i will have to start in fresh
Last week i lost my keys while i was out (pissed of course) and that includes the key to my apartment
which is also the key to the front door and the celler , i keep hearing scary stories that in these situations
you have to pay to have everybodys locks changed , but this makes no sense as the only one that should be changed is
the one in my apartment who is going to walk around to every building in my city and use my keys on all the front doors ??
Also is it possible that my fully comprehensive AOK health insurance has some kind of liability insurance built into it??
or is there a way to do a search for the number that is imprinted into the key to see if its been handed in
thanks in advance for any help you can offer me
wes

I doubt your health insurance will pay for lost keys in inebriated state.

However, a Haftpflichtversicherung (liability insurance) probably would.
Edit: Sorry, read that question again, I doubt health insurance includes liability insurance. No. Would it be possible for you to get liability insurance now and just 'lose' the keys at a later date (depending on when it will be covered under the policy)? (Do you have a second copy of the key?)
If the owner can have you pay for a new Schließanlage depends on where and how you lost it. If it was lost and cannot be recovered (fallen into a river and things like that) you don't. You should probably ask an expert about it, or check your Haftpflichtversicherung policy if loss of keys is covered in it.

it wouöd be awkward if my girlfriend and i both had to exist on the same key but i guess if i did get some liability insurance the i could lose them in a month or two

Many Haftpflichtversicherung policies this (often with a deductible), but your Krankenkasse certainly won't!
If you lost only your keys--and not your keys along with your wallet/ID/passport/address/etc.--then the locks may not need to be changed.

Yeah, I suppose it would. What kind of keys are they? Depending you might be able to have a copy made (legally) without the papers. Most keys nowadays will probably be security keys, though.
Did you lose the keys tonight by any chance (just judging from your typing abilities)?

That's called insurance fraud.

But what really be handy if there was a way to be able to track the number that is stamped into the key if someone say handed it to the police or the company that manufactured it.
I´m actually really surprised that its taken so long to lose them in the first place.

thanks mate i will take it under advice and live a pure sober life so there is no chance of ever losing my keys
on a more real note every now and then i will get drunk and on an even rarer occasion i may drop or lose something
i was just asking for advice on the best way to deal with this situation and the limit of my liability
But from the information i found on the net this morning it looks like the worst that may happen is i have to pay for
a replacement key.
thanks to those of you who have tried to help

No not true really. If you can just get the keys copied, you may get lucky and find a place that will do it.Just keep stumm about it.If you look at the chances of someone finding your key and knowing which lock it fits in a place the size of Münich well you could sit on a needle in a haystack.
If you cannot get the keys copied then the landlord could insist on having the front door lock changed and the costs of all the new keys is down to you. This is what Private liability insurance is for.Not expensive and cover is world wide.As to not getting drunk well i have it easy, opted out of alcohol 22 years ago.

Keys: will depend on what kind of security system the house has for main-door and all if 1) you'll need to pay for total replacement and 2) how expensive that would be. Just be aware that if it is a major security system for the house, you don't report the loss, then some bad guy finds the key and because even though you don't remember from your blissfull alcohol induced state of amnesia there was some hint/information to what house that key belongs and if the same bad guy gets in and breakes into the cellar, attic, another apartment, whatever and the police finds out that is was your key he used to enter, well then you might be up shit creek without a paddle (provided you don't have some third party liability insurance, which you obviously don't, otherwise the key-issue would be covered with a good-one anyway). I know there are a lot of qualifiers in the sentence above, but I am a big fan of Dr. Murphy ("Anything that can go wrong will go wrong eventually!") so beware...
Insurance: nobody should walk around without a third party liability insurance anyway, the financial risk of not having is potentially gigantic, can virtually screw up the rest of your life big time because of a simple moment of neglegence on the other side the costs to obtain 10 million worth of coverage (including 25.000.- for replacing lock-systems after lost keys, btw) are ridiculous in comparison (70-100 EUR/year for a really good one). Get yourself set up with one asap is my recommendation - but for once not trough me because I can't back you on the lost-in-two-month-key issue for professional/ethical reasons...
