Der Teufeljäger
What's the uproar with this new book in Germany? Anyone read it and have comment/review?

For those of you who haven't heard of this... here's a link to help you come up to speed:

NYTimes Review:

QUOTE
Not many literary readings are restricted to an over-18 audience. Fewer still take place under circus tents. Yet nothing could be more appropriate for the scandalous German best-seller “Wetlands, by a television personality and author, Charlotte Roche. With her jaunty dissection of the sex life and the private grooming habits of the novel’s 18-year-old narrator, Helen Memel, Ms. Roche has turned the previously unspeakable into the national conversation in Germany. Since its debut in February, the novel (“Feuchtgebiete, in German) has sold more than 680,000 copies, becoming the only German book to top Amazon.com’s global best-seller list.

QUOTE
"This generation of women dares to declare that there are other things in life than either career or children,"

One source of generational discord is pornography. Schwarzer initiated the PorNo campaign in 1987 to fight for a ban on porn. Roche, by contrast, says "I get a lot out of good porn," and calls traditional feminism "joyless."

Traditional feminists such as Alice Schwarzer, a pioneer of the German women's movement in the 1970s, have condemned the latest feminists for being interested only in "their personal affairs: that is, career and men."

Time:New wave of women.

Hehe. I'm not a feminist, I'm a me-ist.

i've read a lot about this book since it came out, but what disturbed me the most was ms roche herself saying the only way she could get her book published, was by to be really over-the-top. in essence, she wanted to write a book and presented her idea to a publisher. they told her there were already too many books about sex from a teenagers perspective. if it were to get published, she had be extreme, which she did.

a friend who read it, told me about one scene where the protagonist licks toilet bowls. i'm not sure why i would want to read that? same went for american psycho. no need to read about how women's innerds get eaten by mice.

I read the first 10 pages of this book due to it being left around the house by a housemate. From that admittedly limited excerpt (on piles and anal sex.) the book gave a very "kooky journalist" feel...like an extended article out of 'Neon'. Not too bad, but trying to hard, is the verdict.
traumfrau
Read this book a while ago. The whole experience was like a really nasty Accident : you can neither look at it, nor look away from it ! It is not a really the most shocking Book ever... but definitely one of the explicit ones.

I was given the book last night. The guy who gave it to me is reading it as well and mentioned getting together after we'd read it to discuss it. His wife looked a bit disgusted with the book laugh.gif So, if anyone else in Munich is reading it and interested in discussing it (in German), let me know.
