Asian food markets in Stuttgart

E.g. where to buy ingredients for sushi

Are there any Asian food market or shops which would sell Japanese ingredients in Stuttgart.

See my thread on Chinese food.

I went to Beta and they had some Japanese stuff. Not sure if they'd sell all the equipment for making sushi but if you already have the rolling mats and stuff then they probably have all the ingredients you need.

So, have you made (us all) sushi? Have you found a good place selling good-enough-to-eat-raw salmon and tuna?

I peered in through the window (it's one of those places which checks to ensure I'm in the office before opening) and I couldn't see a fish counter. However, for the OP's original needs it looks perfect, especially if you're this side of town.

its in the freezer! Not perfect, but a lot of fish counters are just defrosting the stuff anyway, they have some good stuff and you pay for it

Ah, I couldn't see the freezer. I once bought very expensive fatty tuna from a supermarket in North London, which had been flown in fresh from Japan (the fish, not the entire supemarket). A Japanese friend thought it'd be ok to freeze. He lied. The water breaks up the fibers of the fish as it expands. Luckily I'd eaten half of it fresh. The supermarket's gone bankrupt now, unfortunately.

I assume if it's frozen properly (ie not just dumped into a domestic freezer on top of the vodka bottle and pizzas) then it'll be OK. I'll give it a go and, as always, report back. Assuming I can get to the shop one evening before 6pm.

I live in Stuttgart and found that the REAL has great FRESH Fish on ice. Not frozen fish in styrofoam!
I love Sushi and roll my own Spicy Tuna rolls and Salmon sashimi. Only certain REALs have a fresh fish section.
I go to the one in Bobligen off the Hulb exit. It is located next to a Gamerdinger store and Ford dealship.

I was there on Friday as I work nearby. A colleague drove me there so I could buy a cheapo BBQ. Without a car (there's a separate thread for that!!) it's not very convenient unfortunately. But next time I'm there, I'll give it a go. Maybe this Saturday I'll catch the one JDee recommended, too, as I can't get there during the week as it only opens office hours. It is, however, very convenient for me apart from being shut ;)

Thanks for the replies, sorry i havent it it was more of a forethought in the fact. I would like to make and eat japanese food for work lunches since they seem to fill me up but with out making me sluggish. I like fresh fish but the meals i plan to create just needs everything but the raw fish.
If interested in creating japanese style food you can find other interesting creations here.

I'm new here, so I couldn't answer earlier: There's a Korean (?) shop - called "Asian Food and Gifts", I think - at Bebelstr.56 . Phone (Landline): 0711. 63 20 89. The shop is between Spittastrasse and Claudiusstrasse. Public transport stop is "Spittastrasse". Take the U9 (towards Enstation Vogelsang), or the U4 (Terminus Botnang) from downtown Stuttgart

I often saw a sign in their window saying something like "Samstag Sushi" (Sushi on Saturdays).

This is a Korean store, i think, with food mainly from Korea, Taiwan, and China, IIRC ... I'm not very much interested in Asian food or so, but their "Instant Noodles with Beef Flavor" are addictice (well, nearly ... :) if you add 1 or 2 spoonful of vinegar ... :) ... I'd go there and have a look: If they sell complete sushi, they might be offering the ingredients, seasonings etc. as well ..

I remember even having bought fresh (?) Soybean sprouts years ago. I think they had them once or twice a week.

Prices were at a very reasonable level last time I was there (about 2 months or so ..)

There are/were even more Asian shops in Stuttgart, I just don't have the exact locations/addresses of them ... let me know if you need them ...

Good luck

Thanks for that - I've just cycled over to have a look. It's called "Dong A". What a lovely place! They sell everything to make sushi apart from the fish. They also sold nigiri and sushi rolls (california rolls) at reasonable prices to take away; which I did.

Stuttgart seems full of interesting shops, all scattered about. What a great idea; it must help keep traffic volume down rather than everyone driving to a central place with a concentration of specific ethnicity shops.
