Demo against homophobic attacks

Today (monday the 9th of June) there will be a demo against attacks on gay and lesbians which starts at Mariannen Platz (Berlin Kreuzberg) at 7 pm.

Details:

7 Lesbians left a Lesbian Gay BiSexual Transgender (LGBT) party at SO36 on Sunday morning. Three autos stoppe, several men jumped out of the car, kicked, punched and yelled homophobic words the women. They continued. All were seriously hurt, one of the women became unconscious, another woman is still in the hospital because her ear continues to bleed. Witnesses said that one of the cars had a bumper sticker "Graue Wölfe" (Gray Wolves) which is symbol of a fascist group.

There has been an increase in violence against LGBT people.

This is a call to attention and help. Please stand with the community and against all forms of violence.

Aren't the "Gray Wolves" a muslim fascist group? I knew a refugee in Toronto from Turkey, he was a university professor threatened with death by a group of that name because of his liberal views toward religions. He converted from Islam to Christianity and that put his and his family's life in danger. Are they the same?

Was it Gayhane or Ladyhane on Sat night in SO36. I fell sorry for the girls. I hope it is a good turnout for the demo . Unfortunately i cannot make it.

The Grey Wolves are a Turkish ultranationalist fascist group more known for attacks on religious moslems in Turkey, Kurds and Armenians so saying they are a 'moslem fascist' group is rather deceptive. They are if anything fanatically secular.

parnell, you might note: saying a group "wages war on Christianity" doesn't refute the position that they are fanatically secular.

edit: although I would like to see proof of the statement that this group is know n for attacks on religious Muslims in Turkey. It wouldn't shock me however, given the history of the place and the military's role as a protector of secularism, to have an ultra-nationalist group also take up this position.

Christ if you actually read the link you would see that it is their fascism and not their religion that is the issue. Their aim is to create Turan, a Turkish superstate stretching from the mediteranean to Siberia. As I noted their targets have not just been Greek and Armenian Christians biut have also included attacks on Kurds, Turkish liberals and religious moslems such as members of the present Turkish administration. They have also been stromngly associated with Gladio.

I wish the police in berlin and the mayor would get their heads out of their asses with the continued growing crime, mafia, etc. I think they are wrapped up in it. Weak government shows its ugly head on the street.

I would imagine that the Mayor of Berlin, being a gay man himself, probably does take this case very seriously indeed.

Yep, that must be them - or at least the group who were after the fellow I knew. He was given refugee status, btw. Apparently they are very highly placed in the security forces & government in Turkey. But what I don't understand is why would they be operating in Berlin? Is it really the same group, or is it a bunch of redneck wannabes who've adopted the name?

Wowereit might be a bit of a media schlampe, but he does seem to take his job seriously and seems popular with the voters.
What he does is his own business but he has a full time partner innit.

Even in what is supposed to be a liberal city, LGBTs are still exposed to attacks from fascist bastards like the Grey Wolves.

Here's an older article about the "Grey Wolves" who have been around in Germany for decades and are monitored by the Verfassungsschutz because of their extremist leanings: "Jugendliche Deutsch-Türken: 'Graue Wölfe werden verharmlost'", TAZ 8 Nov. 2007. The interviewee says that in recent years they have succeeded in increasing the number of young members as a consequence of poor integration into German society. They cooperate with certain mosques, football clubs etc. to get hold of Turkish youths.

Laying aside all the stuff about the Grey Wolves for a second, I hope the demo was large and noticed, and am sorry I didn't get to hear about it earlier. Thanks for info though, Chicago Rose. Two subsidiary points: 1) probably no coincidence that on Sat night/Sun morning there were lots of stroppy Turks wandering about after their national team had just been comfortably beaten in the European Championships by Portugal; 2) there was also a new Turkish gay night launched in Kreuzberg that night, at a venue called Gladt, a mixed night for gays and lesbians. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?
Unbelievably savage and stupid mentality - but then the homophobia in the Turkish community ain't nothing new. Feelings of inferiority + dumb old machismo = recipe for homophobia. Do keep me posted if you here any more info, please.

I am a hetrosexual and I am not homophobic or intolerant in any way. I used to question why there were "gay-pride parades" "christopher st celebrations" (not just in berlin, but from the original christopher st in east village, manhattan) and so many pro-gay marches, etc.? Now I realize, if after so much discrimination in the past and yes, currently that exist in remote pockets, based on their personal, free choices in life, they deserve to have those parades and marches, showing off such freedom and victory in tolerance.

hypothetical scenario:

If a bunch of skinheads were passing by and saw the turks beating up white girls (but they're lesbians) who would they choose to beat up?
