Toytown is featured this week in the Expat section of the Weekly Telegraph:

It's net gain for sociable expats living in Germany

QUOTE (Telegraph)
Picture a town in cyberspace without litter, crime, visible poverty, but with public transport that runs on time. Not hard to imagine, perhaps. But now imagine this virtual community modelled on a very real place: Munich. Welcome to Toytown, Germany's largest English-language online forum.
PES
Wow, an interview with Edbob:

QUOTE
I'm sitting in a Munich café with the editor, "Bob", the man behind this virtually real project. James, as he is known in real life, describes how after arriving in Munich 10 years ago, he felt the city's 12,000 expats needed a means of exchanging messages and arranging meetings.

Frustrated that Expatica - formerly the leading networking site - lacked such a forum, James decided to create his own. In 2002 he launched Toytown Munich.

I think it rocks... we DO have something special here. I I don't mean "special" like the short bus, I mean realllly special.

When I decided to make some huge changes in my life recently, I found both my boyfriend wub.gif and a great new job on TT, in just a few short months. Not to mention that the women of the Ladies' Club (sadly missing from the article) were my rock through a brutally hard time not that long ago. Then you have something like Andrew's wake, and how utterly incredible that was to prove that we are not just a bunch of annoying ex-pats, but actually real, true friends.

The potential to meet friends for life runs high here, I think. And that is not to be underestimated.

BB, if you have such a low opinion of TT, why are you here at all?

I don't have a low opinion of TT yet I don't think that it is actual news.
But it might bring more to the TT site from amongst those who did not know that TT existed! There are quite a lot of them.
boomtown_rat
there are even TT offspring now too I think
Small Town Boy
Good article, gay photo though. There's no way Editor Bob can convince us that that's him sitting under the tree!

Exactly. It's like a magazine part in the middle, it's not meant to be news.

Didn't keydeck and badger get married, too, or is that just my imagination?
Gen
No that's me in the photo. Not my best side though.

Edit: damn, two posts too late. And IPJ, no. You are so way not caught up. rolleyes.gif

Sure tongue.gif . But I just couldn't leave that unsaid.

Ok, now back to your comment.

I'm very surprised it didn't mention the place is infested with post stalkers, wind up artists, some attention hogs, imaginative and creative writers, liars, overly disputatious and sometimes cranky members, perseverater, members who are sensitive and kind, lofty thread titles starters, and folks trying to peddle all sort of things, including a damn dog.

Oh shit, it sounds like I'm referring to myself laugh.gif .

Certainly a good place to lose oneself in the crowd...

Still, it's exposure and that's OK. Congrats to Howe for his freelance piece.

Bloody hell, I guess he didn't see the petition for English subtitles thread, might not have got such a good write up then laugh.gif . Guess you munchinks already knew EB's name was James...woohooo James

Oh yes absolutely! I totally agree.
I was simply pointing out to some people who thought it was meant to be breaking news that in fact it was meant to be and is an informative article on a facet of expat lfe.

James feels the site has reached saturation level with 10 per cent of the country's expats signed up to the forum.

This comment surprised me. In Munich I'm sure that's true, but TT Germany is still only two years old and I'm sure there are still huge numbers of expats in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin who haven't heard about the site. The Berlin subforum, for example, is a lot quieter than the Munich one, despite the city having nearly three times the population (and so presumably more expats than Munich).

Pageviews seem to be on the up still as well:

Hey, tt didn't break up my marriage! It was just witness to the horrible train wreck of my separation, and divorce, and rebound and, life.

I guess I won't be looking for love here. unsure.gif

There was me assuming Howsthat was male.
Keydeck
TT doesn't kill marriages, monkeys with guns kill marriages!
Pas
Any idea where I might find one as it could save me a divorce settlement.

You forgot the pedantic moderators totally lacking a sense of humor who edit or "delete" posts at will and change topic witty titles to bland, search-friendly information.

That's an excellent point about there being no "visible" poverty. I hadn't really thought about it, but it's not the chatting with poor people that I mind, it's having to look at them.
UrbanAngel
Hi Howsthat,

I want to show someone the article but will be writing the link down on a piece of paper for them.. the direct link is too long, but when I go to Telegraph.co.uk and then Expats, I can't find the article anywhere!

Please could you help me locate it?

It'll be easier for me to remember the path.

tinyurl is great for this. TT article is now under this link: http://tinyurl.com/3hwvf2

It is curious though. I expected to be able to navigate to it in "Telegraph.co.uk -> Expat -> Expat Living" but the most recent article there is 30.05.08. Maybe they just haven't updated it yet.

UA you can also just go to (or write down) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ and type Toytown in search. Or just print this page!
Matt T
From the expat home page, select Germany in the map at the top-right of the page, and it's the top story (right now).
UrbanAngel
Ahaaa, thanks Matt T!
