ok, i've tried my best but have obvioulsy been mixing with the right (or wrong, depending on your take on things!) crowd so my German slang ain't too hot. Basically a friend of mine is doing a Masters in German translation, and has come up against this sentence...

'When I first found you, you thought a blow job was something a western haridresser did. You thought a dose of the clap was a round of applause at the Bolshoi.'

She just needs a really colloquial word for Geschlechtskrankheiten...any help greatly appreciated. we might all learn something! tongue.gif

thanks

the clap = der Tripper according to leo
JoolyBooly
would it even translate? Can't imagine the German for "clap" (Klatschen) has anything to do with an STD huh.gif

thankfully i have no clue what "The clap" is in German, anyway!
mellelisa
Just asked a german colleague who thought i was absolutely nuts not to mention diseased!

Du dachtest, ein kleiner "Klatsch!" wäre eine Runde Applaus im Bolshoi Theater.
Showem
"Klatsch" ain't "the clap". Gonna have to totally reword it. If you want the joke intact that is.
Jimbo
Trippe is just gonorhea - I've just asked a German colleague and she doesn't know of a synonym.
nilpferd
but gonnorhea is the clap isn't it??
Jimbo
Technically yes, but it's got a wider meaning IMHO - most people use it for STDs in general.
Showem
Hmmm, I have doubts about Jimbo's statement, but the backwaters of Essex probably use a different slang than the sticks of Alberta.

Ok German colleague thought a dose of the clap meant a good spanking...
she says Trippe is the word they use.

HAH! The funniest thing I've read on the board in days!

Far too close to 'Grippe' which just means flu. Imagine the looks at the Apotheke.

Trippe & Grippe

Reminds me of when I first came here and didn't understand the difference in German between disco and nightclub.
interplanetjanet
What's the difference between a disco and a night club? (I'm married - I've never been to one here in Germany)

From an old Australian band (AkkaDakka back in the Bon Scott days):
QUOTE
She gave me the Queen
She gave me the King
She was wheelin' and dealin'
Just doin' her thing
She was holdin' a pair
But I had to try
Her Deuce was wild
But my Ace was high
But how was I to know
That she'd been dealt with before
Said she'd never had a Full House
But I should have known
From the tattoo on her left leg
And the garter on her right
She'd have the card to bring me down
If she played it right

She's got the Jack

Poker face was her name
Poker face was her nature
Poker straight was her game
If she knew she could get you
She play'd 'em fast
And she play'd 'em hard
She could close her eyes
And feel every card
But how was I to know
That she'd been shuffled before
Said she'd never had a Royal Flush
But I should have known
That all the cards were comin'
From the bottom of the pack
And if I'd known what she was dealin' out
I'd have dealt it back

She's got the Jack

- And it hurts!

(well I think that it is relevant)
Iceberg Slim
not that it's really helping anyone, but as I posted it a long time ago and nobody seemed to notice, it's der Tripper not Trippe.
Jimbo
Yeah, I noticed - I just prefer my mis-spelt version.
