Residence permit holder here. If I've sent a de-registration letter to the Munich KVR and have left Germany to travel throughout Schengen, will anything pop-up if I'm crossing a Schengen to non-Schengen border (and vice versa) if I've been out of the country longer than 90 days since I notified the KVR?
For example, if I fly from Madrid back to the States on day 120 since I left Germany, will there be any issues leaving a Schengen airport? Or will they merely see that I hold a residence permit and not probe my passport as they would a tourist who may have overstayed? Same question goes for if I am trying to get back INTO Schengen from, say, a one-week trip to Cairo.
My understanding is that third-country nationals holding a Schengen state residence permit are allowed to travel 90 out of 180 in the Schengen area, but then have to return to the issuing country. However, admittedly, I probably won't return to Germany before heading back to the States. Yes, I want to use the residence permit as an extra edge to travel --- on my own savings --- longer than the 90 days I'd otherwise be allowed as a tourist or resident.
Thanks for your positive response.
