Now it starts. This promises to be a interesting and truly historical battle. Liberal vs. conservative, youth against the aged, and, of course, the racial issue. Rock and roll!

Oh, and by the way: Go Obama!

Romney just beat McCain in Montana and so did Paul! McCain doesn't have the full support of the wack job Republicans and he lost the independents when he sucked up to Bush post-2000. This may be the one election where the VP(s) will be a determining factor in the election. That is my prediction.
PES
That is down right embarrassing for McCain.
sarabyrd
No racial issue that I can see. It's D against R.
thefirelane
Racial issues aren’t typically very public, but there are very dirty, and very targeted tricks practiced within the Republican party designed to bring out their most hate-filled members. A good example was the McCain vs. Bush primary where the Bush camp spread all sorts of rumors about his “illegitimate black baby. All you need to do to start off a rumor like that is a couple hundred “survey phone calls:

“Hello, I’m calling from the Media Survey Group, and we’re doing a survey to see what issues voters in the primary have heard of from media coverage
“ok
“Have you heard about issue X?
“yes
“Are you aware of issue Y?
“yes
“Did you hear that McCain fathered an illegitimate black baby?
“ummm, no… really?

Of course it’s not true, but then again, they’re just asking if you heard about it, not saying it happened rolleyes.gif

somehow i have the feeling that obama's going to win this one. if he does, i think we'll be seeing fiestas in the streets unlike with any past presidential victory. it will be a good time to be in the united states.
Lorelei
I wonder, if Obama is not going to run a negative campaign, whether he'll survive once the Republicans get their claws into him.

Guess who was the last presidential candidate who vowed to change Washington culture...:

QUOTE
Bush, ... like others before him, chose to play the Washington game the way he found it rather than changing the culture as he had vowed to do at the outset of his election campaign.

According to: Scott McLellan, George Bush's former press secretary

Amazing how I never believed Bush for a second. Every one knew he was no "uniter" and it was a big fucking joke. Why would you post a joke in comparison to the Democratic Nominee?
Small Town Boy
The brightest stars fade the fastest. That fact, combined with a drawn-out nomination campaign and their disenfranchisement of their own voters in two swing states in the primaries, means that my money is regrettably on McCain. The Democrats have a wonderful ability to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.
leky
Well from another Brit...my money is also on McCain, I would've given Hilary a chance what with Billy boy behind her, but Obama...no way IMO, I also reckon the Libertarian party will get a lot more votes than usual.
JerseyBoy
I have a very bad feeling that McCain will win this one. There are too many ignorant people in the US to elect a black man as president.
bohemka
And what about this Michelle Obama "bombshell" of a slip-up that's about to drop? How much mileage will McCain get out of that? What effect, deserved or not, will that have?
eurovol
Here is one of the biggest scumbags in Camp Hillary. They just won't let it go and let Obama be the nominee and have the space to make his own decisions. These people called him everything but the "n" word and now they want to join him? These people have no shame!

QUOTE
June 4, 2008

Petition to:

Senator Barack Obama

Dear Senator Obama,

We write you because we believe it is very important for the Democrats to win back the presidency in 2008. To do so, we must field the strongest possible ticket for the Democratic Party. We believe the 2008 election could be close. And your selection of a vice presidential candidate may make the difference between victory and defeat.

We write to urge you to select Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to be your choice for vice president because we believe that she would be, by far, the most qualified and strongest candidate to be your running mate.

Both you and Senator Clinton during this campaign have demonstrated strengths in different segments of the electorate and in different parts of the country. Together, you stand the best chance of making U.S. history not once but twice -- the first African American president and the first female vice president since the founding of our great nation.

We know this is ultimately your decision on who is to be your running mate. But with the greatest respect, we ask you to select Senator Clinton in recognition of the more than 17 million Democrats who supported her at the polls and who, in combination with your more than 17 million supporters, would form the base of a successful presidential campaign in the November election.

Sincerely,

"Hillary for VP '08 Committee"

Its called politics - your enemy yesterday may be your friend tommorow... or would you rather they continue to be devisive?
MajorBummer
My God, Obama is so handsome. wub.gif

Yes, I realise that was an incredibly shallow and politically totally irrelevant thing to say, but, after reading all these threads and never saying a word, I just can't keep it bottled up anymore. biggrin.gif

McCain + Romney > Obama + Clinton
georgiagirl
I totally agree, MB... Obama is just ridiculously good-looking; and let's face it, that does often play a role in political success whether people admit it or not. I'm not saying he'll coast to the White House solely on the strength of his smile, but hell, it certainly won't hurt him either.
lilplatinum
Being good looking makes an entire generation of middle aged (and older now i suppose) women look back fondly on the 'camelot' days of JFK despite his atrocious governance, so I suppose it ain't exactly a liability.
georgiagirl
Would it be inappropriate of me to post an 'I'd Hit It' pic? Yes? Okay.

Obama 2008: Because you know you'd hit it. Three times.
lilplatinum
As long as it aint of Clinton I think we'll be safe.

A bit puny, though. Skinny wrists and spindly hands. Doesn't look as virile as JFK or Clinton.

His wife probably can't cook..

I'm a good cook! biggrin.gif

America waits for Clinton to fuck off

Read the last paragraph.

Jessica Simpson for pres.
lilplatinum
If we're going to have another president as dumb as Bush, at least lets pick an attractive one - Jessica Simpson has a man face. Too bad Kate Beckinsale isn't American, I'd nominate that..
tor
i bet if McCain chooses Condi they would be pretty tough to beat.
lilplatinum
People from the Bush administration are damaged goods, Condi doesn't bring much to the table strategically.

dude...

Paper bag it. I just said a man face - the rest is fine. Anyways, after growing up in Texas the vapid blonde airhead doesn't really do it for me anymore..

The primaries are done, the main event is here, and the political analysis on this thread is spot on. I'll be tuning in daily.

I think it's still a bit too early to drop the bomb.

I'm now taking bids on this item:

Ok, If you want almost good political analysis.

Bobby Jindal is someone that should be taken very seriously as a possible VP candidate for McCain. He quite neatly covers two big weak points for McCain, firstly by appealing to religious conservatives, and secondly by being a member of a minority group.

The fact that he is a creationist however, means the my vote will be lost by McCain.

QUOTE
Mr. Jindal said that “there’s no scientific theory that explains how you create organic life out of inorganic matter, and that students should “decide for themselves.

It really is shameful for the Republican party that this level of ignorance is tolerated, most especially because the destruction of science education is one of the most harmful things for America's future.
BadBob
Did Barry find a new church yet?

Damn shame that the Repubes are religious nutters now isn't it.
BadBob
You mean like Rev. Wright or Calipso Louie? They are in the Nobama camp.

This nutcase also wrote a serious article to the New Oxford Journal suggesting that he saw his friend possessed by a demon. Read a bit of the article, I reckon he sounds properly crazy, but in a scary cult-like way. Note the comments on the page too, these are the equally crazy nutcases that McCain would want to attract by picking him as a VC.
bohemka
Bob Bob Bob, Bob Bob Iran, are you a McCain supporter?

This isn't the Democrat primary thread anymore. Simply throwing dirt at Obama ain't gonna cut it. What's your boy got? It'd take a mountain of evidence to convince me he'd do one thing differently than Bush.
eurovol
Well, McCain did vote against the tax cuts in 2001 before he became McSame!
lilplatinum
Nothing wrong with tax cuts, they just shouldn't be coupled with expensive wars.
Bell the cat
I predict it will go the way of the 7th season of the West Wing:

The campaign starts with a seasoned republican with a congressional reputation for bipartisan legislation (Arnold Vinnick) ranged against a young senator from an ethnic minority with a short but skillful congressional career but no long track record standing on a change platform (Matt Santos)

various minor "scandals" dog Santos but Vinnick is holed by a divided Republican party that will not untite for him and so Santos squeeks through to win

Barack Obama: There Will Be Bamboozling

bohemka
Nope, nothing else from Anti-Obama Bob.
Jules Winnfield
The importance of race has been completely overstated in this campaign and it's become a major issue only when (1) stooges in Obama's camp have embarrassed him or (2) people have dared to question whether he would even be where he is at if he happened to be white. Race unfortunately has become his get-of-jail-free card and been used to whitewash (no pun intended) a very weak candidate whose populist rhetoric isn't backed up by any substance. Obama will be cut to pieces for this and the next few months will give his legions of fawning followers a true reality check (all this despite McCain being merely an above-average candidate himself)...
bohemka
McCain is far south of "above average." He's morphed on every position he has just get the Rep base. This isn't going to go unnoticed.

And you keep brining up race, and how it's overstated. I think you've overstated the overstatedness of race.
Jules Winnfield
Sure... dry.gif

That's why every setback in Obama's campaign has been attributed to the alleged racism of people who have the unmitigated gall not to support his candidacy.
Bell the cat
not every setback Jules and certainly not by OB himself. In most instances when pressed he has shied away completely from playing the race card.
