Only Munich has a KVR, other cities don't

A reminder to Munich-based members on TT

Editor Bob
In the "Visas and permits" section of TT, as well as occasionally "Life in Berlin" or "Life in NRW" etc., various TT members in Munich post advice about how to deal with German bureaucracy.

Note, however, that telling members in Berlin to "go to the KVR" is misleading. Berlin doesn't have a KVR. Neither does any other city in Germany besides Munich. The various offices are called other things entirely, for example "Ordnungsbehörde" or "Ausländeramt" or whatever.

So, if you don't know the name of the particular office in the particular city being discussed, it's better to post instead that a visit should be paid "to the offices of the relevant authority", or something like that.

Incidently, KVR is short for Kreisverwaltungsreferat. This can be literally translated as "district administration department".

I've always found it strange that Munich has a KREISverwaltungsreferat when Munich isn't a Kreis but a Stadt.

Yeah, the Wikipedia article I link above states that the "Kreis" part of the name is technically wrong. But it's been kept for historical reasons, or something.
Allershausen
But there is such a thing as Kreis München, places like Garching come under it, however I'm not sure if the KVR cover things like Visas and stuff for the these places. As an aside a possilbly little known and dull fact: Vehicles registered in a Kreis München town only have one letter in their number plate whereas Stadt München ones have two.

The KVR is for STADT München alone. Landeskreis München has a completely separate Verwaltung for everything, some things are done at Kommunal level and some things are done at Kreis level.

Allershausen, you are correct when you say the Munich KVR does not handle VISAs and stuff for residents of Kreis München (or Landkreis München) which includes the towns surrounding Munich such as Unterschleissheim, Oberschleissheim, Garching. They are known as Landratsamt München (and are, coincidentally, located in Munich). This is where I got my Niederlassungserlaubnis. This is not, however, where you switch your license plates on your car and those such things.

Landratsamt is the Kreisverwaltungsbehörde for the Landeskreis München. Is does not deal with anything to do with the city of Munich.

Ok First link explains what is needed and by whom. You will note that under the paragraph "Resident Permit for EU Nationals" that you do not require a work permit, you just have to submit the filled in application form. it is a little confusing that they refer to it as a "residence permit" in one sentence and then the form itself is called an "application for registration" but don't forget we are in Germany here.

Unfortunately, you cannot fill the English version of the form on line, which is just as well because it does not contain all the forms. However, if you go here you get the German version of the form called "Anmeldung", which if you fill in the first page all the other pages will be populated with your data.

The second form is "right of free movement for the foreigners registration office shit" which a pleasant lady told me I should fill in as well if at any time this bloody office needed to prove that I had the right of free movement. This is also the form that you tick the little box that says you are unemployed with sufficient means of subsistence and health insurance if those are your circumstances; they will not deport you for being unemployed although a friend of mine says one particular bureaucrat threatened him with a concentration camp if he did not fly back to England

Youv've taken the time to find links for all the relevent forms. How sweet.

Fill all the fucking forms out, print them, sign and date them, take a copy if you are feeling particularly Germanic and stick them in an envelope with a photocopy of your passport and send them off to:

Landeshauptstadt München
Kreisverwaltungreferat

Over two years since TT went from being a Munich thing to being a Germany thing, some members still haven't cottoned on.

It's like those Pacific islanders found occasionally who still aren't aware that WWII is over.

Huh, what? You mean German actually extends beyond Andechs in the south and Oberschleißheim in the north??

It's a Kreisstadt: Link in German 'cause I'm too lazy to translate right now
Owain Glyndwr
no it is not. Munich is a "KreisFREIE Stadt". doh!

from Ed Bob's link (which was a good read, thanks!)

QUOTE
Landkreises
