Shocking Lidl ReportA friend of mine sent me this mail about Lidl this morning:
QUOTE
"Lidl demanded that Czech and Polish women workers wear special headbands during their monthly periods. Lidl has once again shown its true face. Lebensmittelzeitung, the leading commerce weekly, tells that the German hard discounter has forced its Czech saleswomen to wear a special headband during their menstruation periods. Reportedly, this practice was imposed on the women workers also in Poland, which shows that the management in Germany must have known and approved of it. The headband was forced on the women workers to allow supervisors to identify when they had their monthly periods, as they were the only ones allowed to go to the toilet, without asking for special permission. Other workers cannot do this except during scheduled daily breaks. Lidl has stepped over the limits of good taste, says the German commerce industry weekly. This is not the first time that the German discounter is in trouble in its new European markets. Recently, Lidl was caught for selling cocoa powder in Poland, which contained mainly starch, only 30 per cent was cocoa. In the Czech Republic, the company had more than 100 old trees cut down without permission, so that their stores became more visible from nearby roads. Lebensmittelzeitung reports on a growing irritation among Lidl's German competitors in these countries, who feel that the hard discounter is destroying the reputation of all of them. Many of these companies pay better wages, train their workers and recognise the trade unions."
I wonder if it's true.

Anything as retarded as that, that comes in an email, is just spam.

..the email was part of a published article from Uni Commerce (global trade union for commercial workers) so don't think it's spam at all.
was just wondering if it could be true...as naturally
Lidl have denied it.

I found one other reference to this on the
World Socialist Web Site. No idea how credible that is.

I've been researching this and have found almost nothing. The clearly biased union-network.org quotes a story in "the German commerce weekly" which I can't find, and it's an almost verbatim copy of
a story from another extremist left site called globalecho.org.
Lidl
is known for poor treatment of workers and you can find more of this pretty easily, but there is
nothing about tainted food other than one incident from two zears ago about there being trace amounts of peanut protein in some chocolate without having it listed on the label. One person in the UK allegedly went into anaphalactic shock, but that report was unconfirmed.
My guess is that the real source is a disgruntled worker or three and perhaps some anti-globalisation people. The only credible source I found was
a retailintelligence.ie story about this which points out conflicting information from various sources.
woof.

Why is it retarded? This is an article about the same topic by spiegel.de
LidlI have heard similar stories about this company before, although I have been in their stores since. (They were selling Greenpeace magazines at the Kasse last time, lol!)
I won't be going back.

I would it means the discounter is also selling other items (hardware) and not just food.
This article is shocking. Not only the discrimination of women, but also the underlying cause. Not being allowed to use the toilet while you are working is coming close to slavery.

Stern magazine,
Lidl have been spying on their employees in Germany

Why would it be discrimination against women? Are you saying they should not allow them to go to the toilet during menstruating periods as per the men?

No. Stop making shit up and presenting it as fact. The phrase "hard discounter" is more commonly known as "deep discounter", places like Alda,
Lidl, Wal*Mart which offer items at considerable discount to standard sales outlets. They have contracted suppliers who are guaranteed large orders in exchange for a reduction of their profit, sometimes with large brand names (such as was on the front page of the TZ last week). These are either simply rebranded goods, lower quality than the company is willing to sell under its own brand name, or slightly altered from the original brand name version. For example, cotton swabs could just be packaged with a different logo or they might use grade 2 cotton or cheaper and flimsier sticks.

Well, you learn something new every day don't you? There was me thinking they were just a supermarket who treat their employees like shit. I guess that topic isn't really interesting anymore though. Trivial Pursuit anyone?

@BD that is very true of trivial pursuit. I hate the sports questions (esp. the retarded baseball ones::::grrrr::

The Stern item was just talked about on the radio. Said that cameras were installed to spy on the emp's. I think thats a great place to work in, they call it the tibet system.

Mar 26 2008, 3:26 pm
Cameras in the work place are not uncommon in north america. I think it is anti globalization PR combined with resentment felt by workers that obviously feel disenfranchised by working in such an environment. I worked in a bakery for a while which had cameras everywhere except the bake area itself. The number of front people that would come talk to me during their pause because they new their were no cameras there was quite high.

Mar 26 2008, 3:29 pm
The current scandal isn't just about cameras, they've been filming them in secret and prying into their private live, checking up how often and how long they go to the toilet for and making reports on them. Stasi anyone?

Maybe they should all wear traffic cones on their heads when they've got headaches.
It could be said that people in this industry sector have a choice about where they work, even in Germany, it's not hard to get a job at places as ubiquitous as
Lidl,
Aldi or any of the other cheapskate supermarkets that have high employee turnover.
Personally, i'd rather stay at home and file my teeth down than humiliate myself daily for a paycheque from these organisations.

Incredible. So basically you need a headband for permission to piss (or, make adjustments) outside of breaktime. Isn't that illegal? Can't the voting constituency do something to prevent such actions from companies, should their greed outweigh their sense of decency?
That's what needs to get streamlined in the political process... How do voters have a direct effect on their representative? This kinda crap seems to occur all over the place, and I feel bad for the poor bastards who can't get a better job.

In my last tech support (and hoprfully last ever tech support job) in Berlin they management, in their wisdom, put in place the following system.
6 Keychains etc, three blue, three red.
Blue is break, red is toilet.
When you take your break, there must be a blue key chain there. You then take one. Once all are gone you must wait until there is then one there.
Same goes for red (toilet breaks).
This went on in the german team for a month and then they decided it would be good to introduce this to the other internation teams.
During the meeting to tell us this, everyone (English speaking, french speaking, spanish and italian speaking) went to the loo for 5 mins, however only after aksing each other if it was ok to do so.
Management not happy.
First day, we organised it so that we went in threes to the loo, three people from the same team.
Management not happy.
We were told we would get into tro0uble if we did this again.
Third day, the french start taking the german key chains. This causes a lot of trouble, the french said they just took red key chains as told.
Management not happy, managment start to separate the key chains and label the hooks per country.
Fifth day, the friday, all international teams just ignore the key chains.
The germans get annoyed as we are not doing what we should and it is not being enforced as out team leaders are also from the same country/culture as their teams.
Monday, internation key chains have gone after a meeting over the weekend between management and the team leaders.
When I left mid way through last year, this was still a cause of resentment between the german team (to be fair, the biggest team) and the others.
Still makes me laugh, that meeting was great. We even offered to put our hands up and ask for permission to use the loo.
