I'm looking to apply for jobs in IT in Munich, probably in Linux-sysadmin related roles. I was wondering if someone could give my an idea of the salary ranges? I need to know as they seem to always ask for a 'salary expectation' on the application which is bit scary - I never know if I'm ripping myself off or pricing myself out of a potential job.
I have ~5 years experience (although 1 yr was in programming and 2.5 in a role that's more customer support of a proprietary software product running on Linux machines than pure sysadmin) and a Computer Science degree. I also got my RHCE recently.

Learn another OS and or a business system like SAP. I don't think you will be satisfied with strict Linus sysadmin pay. I know I wouldn't.

Yeah but what is a typical Linux sysadmin pay? You never know it might be enough for me

Linux sysadmins are paid better than Windows sysadmins, and SAP is a completely different area altogether. I can't give you a salary range though.

Of course, it will depend a bit on what kind out outfit you work for, but I recently interviewed for Linux Systems Integration position (which is really just a glorified sysadmin position) in the financial services field in Frankfurt. The salary range they offered was approximately €70,000. The work entailed integrating the software from the firm into existing systems for instiutional financial clients.

Hello, i got offered a job for 45 000 euro , this is before taxes , annually of course.
i'm experienced IT system admin, i've never finished my bachelors diploma - dropped while i was on last year, but i got papers saying i have only few subjects(objects?) left, and this is second best school in my country.
+ 8-10 years of experience.
the question is - is it bad or good salary?
the company already paid for one flight to Frankfurt for 1 interview, now they invited me for second, and according to what they say, second means i probably got the job. i don't know if this is too late, but i got second thoughs about the salary. after taxes it will be like 2088 euro per month.
that's really not much, i can earn like 10-20% less here in my country. (Eastern Europe)
it's pretty big company , got offices in many countries, they mainly make software, but also got databases for customers of their customers.
so i just want to ask you - if 45 000 euro is a good salary for IT ( linux administrator ) with my profile. should it be more like 50 or even 55 ?

This is a reasonable salary to live a comfortable life in Frankfurt. But I think that is not really what you are asking.
I am not 100% certain on salaries in that area but it sounds pretty average to me maybe on the lower end.
I imagine they might have factored in your lack of paper qualifications. Also your age might play a role here too - how old are you if you don't mind me asking? The problem I always have with HR when talking about my salary is that in the German eyes I am too young for the amount of work experience that I have. I'll be 30 in a few weeks and been working for almost 9 years - that just doesn't compute very well in the German system as most people my age have only been out of university a year or two. Saying that though the system is changing slowly.
To be honest if 55 is what you want then I would tell them that before you come over for the second interview. Whereas they might be able to negotiate on the salary I doubt they will meet you at 50 or 55. There is no point in wasting their time (or your own for that matter).

From the little I remember of my original job search years ago in the UK (but it's probably still the same and universal too) that financial institutions, and other organisations with similar requirements, pay handsomely for those who can give them computer security and if you have, or can get, experience in this environment then you can do really well in Frankfurt or Duesseldorf.

i'm 28 years old, i worked for few companies for 5-6 years + i got my own bussiness for few years, so i suppose this counts as my experience. they said when we talked, that salary range in their company for IT people is between 40 and 50k.

I was looking for a job in Germany for the last few months and for support type work the rates seem to vary quite a bit from about €36k - €55k per year depending upon the company. The companies would also stick very rigidly to their budget. If it is contract work that you are after then these rates can vary wildly and the better rates are in the financial companies in Frankfurt.
Have a look at
http://www.sueddeutsche.de/jobkarriere/erf...29/article.html for a 'rough' guide to salaries for particular jobs that takes account of the amount of experience you have.

does anyone know salary range for linux admin in german cities (like frankfurt) ?
because according to the link given above, system administrator with 10 years experience, working in western germany in big company can earn , working 40 hours weekly, 35 000 gross. isn't it too little? 35k is normal salary for system admins with 10 years exp. ?
