Value of using apartment rental search agencies

Are they worth their up-front fee?

Afternoon TT,

I'm living in Munich and looking for a new apartment and have been keeping an eye on the usual sites (TT, Suddeutsche Zeitung, ImmobilienScout24, Kurz & Fundig etc.). I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with the agencies that send you details of available apartments for a fixed, up-front fee? A search of TT threw up these guys (http://www.wohnungsboerse.net) who charge 75 Euro. Another agency I found via www.provisionsfrei.com want a 45 Euro fee.

My question really is whether these are worth it or whether the details they forward are those freely available by other means.

Any info or tips for alternative agencies appreciated!

In case it's useful, I'm looking for a reasonably cheap 2-room apartment with EBK and balcony that is inside the first two rings of the MVG public transport network. I realise that with these criteria I'm competing with just about everybody else that is looking in Munich.

Thanks!

What thread was it in? IIRC, there've been posts in which people warned against using these agencies.

Found it! The post I remembered was about a different agency, Infoboerse.

Forget pwib-gmbh (Infoboerse). This is a deceptive operation and a waste of your money.

What this woman does is simply collect ads from the local newspapers and charge you a bundle to read them. There is a delay between when the paper appears on the newsstand and when the ads therein are posted on this site. Inevitably most of the desirable offers will be gone before you see them at Infoboerse.

I paid EUR 69 (I recall) to join this site a year ago because there were something like 60-70 apartments listed online in my desired area and price category. Oh what a great selection, I thought. Well, after paying my money it turns out that fully 85% were dead leads... (click red arrow above to read more)
