Ok I work in Kerpen (west Cologne) and the sun has just disappeared to be replaced with clouds so black that it looks like very late at night!!!
Now the black clouds are moving, heading towards Cologne and the very heavy storm has just hit us. I have never seen anything like this! It is complete darkness, like an eclipse!!
Also my German collegaues nicely told me that the devil is coming... nice.
Any ideas why this has happened? i've travelled a fair bit but have NEVER seen such a ferocious storm!! Well def no BLACK clouds liek this before!

It is pretty darn dark down here in Blankenheim also (1 hour south of Cologne). I was hoping for some really fun thunder and lightning, but so far no go.

I was looking forward to a serious summer storm and downpour, no such luck, just a bit of piddly rain for a few minutes.
It's hard to believe, but the most dramatic, loud storms and heavy rain I've ever experienced has always been in Cologne in the summer.

There are some good areas within this site:
http://www.unwetter.de/pages/blitz.php that give storm information. Have a play about with it.

This was on CNN last night, it was a sandstorm with sand all the way from the Sahara desert.

We had thunders all night until the morning in Aachen, it was nice to hear.

It was nearly constant lightning for about a half-hour last night... quite amazing and a lot of fun. Well... except for my fear that storm would rip the shingles from my roof. Instead I had settle for a down tree in my front yard.

If you use this link (http://www.wetteronline.de/radar/eurodwddf.htm) you can see the radar images of a thunderstorm moving over Stuttgart.

Was out with the kids in the playground when the sand came over at 10.30am. Was pretty scary when everything went pitch black!

We could almost have a Kerpen meetup with the number people the working there. (We used to have an English speaking get together once a week at Gasthaus Schweitzer, but that was a long time ago)
I work there too, it was spooky how dark it actually got, I've never seen it so dark at 10:30 in the morning.

Regarding the meet up in Kerpen, I would go for that :-)
