Where do you live? Might be useful to know if you want some help.

i spent 3 months of living in internet cafes while waiting for my service at home to come in last year.

while free places exist, they aren't all over the place. Most of them are pay, even typical cafes where you'd expect free internet with your coffee / lunch want a couple euros or something for access. They do exist though, i've seen a handful whilst treking around the city since then..

Sadly, nothing on an industrial scale (like in Vienna where about 70% of the cafés subscribe to a common wifi provider offering free wifi to customers), but I'm seeing increased grassroots action (independent cafés offering wifi free to customers, usually with a password but sometimes wide open).

Friedrichshain is booming, particularly in cafés on or around Simon-Dach-Strasse. Many have chalkboards (as opposed to war-chalking) and signs indicating free W-LAN (aka WLAN aka Wifi aka Wireless Internet). Pick a nice day and have a walk around. Most don't change their passwords often (or ever), so once you've visited one café you could also go to the one next door/across the street and use the same network (which of course is not very polite).

A good clue to is to look for the cafés that have patrons leaning intently over laptops. Not a sure sign, but a good indicator!

Another good resource is the international fon.com network - where individuals share their home wifi in exchange for free roaming possibilities, or pay-as-you-surf. I'm a member, and this has saved me on a number of occasions during my travels. Very helpful support staff, and the FON folks so far don't seem evil.

Of course many t-mobile spots also dotted around the city. But at those prices I really hate to encourage them...

Golgatha cafe in Viktoria Park ( Kreuzberg) offers free wi-fi, nice place to hang out. Also a lot of places in Maasen and Goltzstrasses, a coupla mins walk from Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn.

Drama on Mehringdamm, noticed as I passed yesterday advertises "free internet."
