Moving to Munich soon from Arizona desert! Other than warm clothes, any suggestions on what to bring? Great opportunity for us and looking forward to the change. Adios

If you are from Phoenix, lotsa food from Carolinas for me...

What is the best way to ship some household items USA to Germany? We are being minimalists, but want to send some clothing and boots and books. Some rates I saw seemed really high. Suggestions please. Thanks

Cookieman...what food from Carolinas???

I rented space in a container...it was door to door service. No furniture, just boxes (27) Might be worth looking for someone else who is shipping stuff here and you can maybe rent some space in their container.

I would avoid shipping from the us the rates are horrible. To ship three t shirts and a tiny scrap book I paid 40 us dollars. I would bring as many suitcases as you can full. Then bring more each time you come back to visit. I know shipping just a box of my clothing here was gonna cost my family around 300.

Look into a media rate at the USPS to ship your books. Domestically it can save you 60%, and they may offer it internationally as well.

Honestly you can get whatever you could possibly want in Munich. Books as well. Packing light will make everything easier.

Packing light makes sense! I am going to pare everything down to bare bones. However! think I had better bring some salsa and green chilies...we do get homesick for Mexican food. If I have the ingredients I can make tamales! and all the rest. Thanks for your advice...I never heard of renting part of a container!
We arrive in mid July...in time to miss out on our desert temperatures of 110F and higher. Munich is beautiful and we are looking forward to our stay.

When moving from the USA to Europe I would always recommend packing a thick skin.
CEN
JohnnyEnglish: you scared me off! A thick skin? should I ask you to explain???
Bell the cat
what JE means is that after a decade of Bush in power many Europeans are highly critical of the USA and a small number extend that to hatred of Americans too.

Rather than a thick skin, I would recommend an open mind. It is not really that hard to see why Europeans might have a problem with Bush but did deeper and you will see that most of us actually like America and Americans.
