As allowed by the provisions of the Schengen treaty, Austria will be reimplementing border checks and passport controls beginning 00:01 on June 2nd until 2359 on July 1st 2008. Travelers intending on traveling into/thru Austria during this time will be required to present their passport before entry. This also includes EU citizens and those from other Schengen countries.

This Info. has been released by TIMATIC. I have yet to find a free/local news report

Other special rules and visas concerning entry into Switzerland and Austria during this time, can be found At the Austrian Foreign affairs web site

Yep, Austria is invoking the Schengen provisions allowing temporary reintroduction of border controls (anti-hooligan procedures).
I've seen it mentioned in various news articles and some EURO2008 info.

Two examples:

When they did this for the world cup I accidentally forgot my passport for a day trip to Salzburg.

I knew they were checking on the autobahn so it shot off through Bad Reichenhall. No problem at all.

I'd expect the checking to be equally sporadic this time as well.

From the US Embassy:

QUOTE
June 6, 2008 Warden Message
The 2008 European Football Championship will take place in Austria and Switzerland from June 7 – 29, 2008. Up to 5 million visitors are expected.

American citizens planning to travel from Germany to either of these countries through July 1, 2008, should carry a valid U.S. passport. Passport controls will be enforced at all entry points to both Austria and Switzerland, and travelers to both countries are advised that they must use official border crossings.

Further information on this subject is available at the website of the Austrian Foreign Ministry at http://www.bmeia.gv.at/en/foreign-ministry...-2008-visa.html.

Americans living or traveling in Germany are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, or at either the Munich or Frankfurt Consulate, through the State Department’s travel registration web site, https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Germany. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consular Section. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Travel Alerts, Travel Warnings, Worldwide Caution, and Country Specific Information for Germany can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

I hope that for this period the cops grassing to each other across state borders is also suspended. Oder?

Doubtful. It's probably enhanced!
There are a number of German police officers, for instance, who will be working in Austria with full police powers.

The key question for this Saturday is:
Should I shave my head or become a Rasta Man?
