Anyone ever done this? Any horror stories? Any anti horror stories? Thinking of leasing a car for a couple of years and want to hear some opinion on the idea and the choice of leaser i.e. Sixt.

I have done it 4 times now and every time the service was superb! The prices are extremely competitive and the cars are almost new.
A hint: Sixt has a weekend deal that I usually take advantage of. It runs from 12pm Friday until 9am Monday. Back in October I rented one of the NEW Mercedes A Class cars for the weekend and it cost me around 80 euros (exluding Insurance). The weekend deals are GREAT!

Another hint: Sixt (and the other car rental companies) make a LOT of money with optional insurance. Be picky about what you choose. I generally don't opt for full insurance but rather just stick with "Diebstahl" insurance (insurance for theft of the vehicle.) It's very rare that I have a prang and if I do, I am willing to pay.
Have fun!

Never any problems. Competitive price, competent service (compared to the usual germany 'service' anyway), and decent motors.
Europcar, on the other hand, are a bunch of fucking charlatans.

Same old, same old ... what is it about "renting", "leasing", "lending" and "borrowing" ??? Why can't people seem to get it right?
And while we're on the subject of Fucking Charlatans...
...Europcar Edinburgh Airport shagged me 4 weeks ago.
I arrive after dark, do the digital camera thing and photograph all the usual damage spots - it's dark, so I can't see too well, and their car park is conveniently badly-lit. I drive up to Dundee, and stay in the Hilton car park. Next morning I drive to my meeting and back to Edinburgh Airport. I bring the papers in, the station manager checks the car and finds damage --- in the most fuckin' inconspicous place.
So he says I am responsible and I have to pay. He presents me with a form to sign, but clever old me reads the small print. I ask him "If I sign this, I am clearly stating that I am responsible for the damage?". "Yes!" he replies, and it is going to cost me the deposit. "Then I am not signing it". The cheeky bastard only then has the bloody audacity to look me dead in the eye and say "You're don't have to impress me Sir". I am stunned, all I can retort is "I'm not trying to impress you. I'm trying to stop you screwing me!!!". Because I didn't sign that form this damage cost me 90 quid, instead of 500. BE WARNED!
If anybody rents a Blue Renault Megane from Europcar, Reg NY04 FVR and gets screwed, you let me know. I want to let the wolves loose on these monkeys.

PS: Are good hire car firms like good banks and good garages - they only exist in fairytales?

OK, let's talk about
LEASING
Why would you choose Sixt? In the main they offer corporate deals to larger companies for company car pools... They have a good reputation for car management i.e. all-inclusive leasing including insurance, servicing, repairs, etc., which is not usually what the man in the street is looking for... As a one-stop shop they are good (especially if you take 20 cars from them!), but for individuals I would suspect they are over-the-top and not cost effective... Service such as they offer comes at a price...
You generally get better (private) leasing deals from smaller companies, or (especially) companies in bed with the dealer where you buy your car ...

We found out that if you ask for a weekend rate you get a special deal from Friday to Monday by 9am. Also if you rent a car from a non-airport or trainstation you save about 20E because they have more taxes for those locations. We used Hertz 36 69 93 from Leopoldstr and it was the same price as SIXT.
I don't work for Visa, but found this out. If you are renting a car with a US gold or platinum visa card, it includes automatic collision insurance(CDW with no deductible even) You actually must decline their CDW for the Visa insurance to work, which is contrary to my guidebook recommendations. If you want to see if your card covers you and more info: 08008118440 germany toll free
FYI: How do I activate this coverage? For coverage to be in effect, you must: Initiate and complete the entire rental transaction with your eligible Visa Gold card, and Decline the car rental company's collision damage waiver (CDW/LDW) option, or similar provision, if offered by the car rental company. What if the car rental company insists that I purchase its car insurance? Call the program administrator at 800-847-2113 for help
