On a side note, that is the first time I have stepped into a
Lidl for a long, long time - I normally shop at Real. When people would say on here that supermarkets are bad in Germany, I would agree, but not as strongly as most. Now I realise the true extent of what people are talking about. I truly hope I never have to shop at Lidl again. I don't think you could screw up the shopping experience any more if you tried.
Excellent comment there. Lidl is pretty common round this part of Berlin as a main supermarket chain and your shopping patterns can quite easily be dominated by them if you are unlucky. I have the best of both worlds and can pop in on my way home and load up with brand names which they regularly have with a hefty discount (cleaning products, coffee etc) and will cherry pick anything else that is worth nabbing. And say a quiet prayer of thanks to the deity of my choosing that I have other options.

Anyone looking for the apple pies, they have some left at the Frankfurter Ring
lidl, although they are now out of the chocolate shortbreads (at least, there are none left on the shelf).

Before you eat any pre made food just read the ingredients
Thing is, and I've probably typed this before, I'm not so sure that it is a legal requirement in Germany for the ingredients to be listed in the same way as in the UK. It might say product X contains salt and sugar, but may not tell you how much. Point in case is Heinz Baked beans - in the UK, the actual amount of salt and sugar per tin is listed, and BTW, is shockingly high, but the same Heinz branded tin of beans bought here has no such info.

After nearly a year here, I still find myself looking for this info. They don't give you the exact amounts, but the ingredients are still listed in descending order, with the most prevelant ingredient listed first and so on. You'll see a lot of food here with salt very high on the ingredients list.

I'm still upset that I didn't get any cheddar, our
Lidl was completely ransacked and all we could get was some chutney, piccalilli and oh so easy oats (which are great btw!). What's the use in blimmin chutney without any cheddar...

Lidl and it was clean out of most things. Rilana was it the Lidl on the BismarkRing you went to? Anyway, have family coming over next week for 5 days and there bringing my Tetley Tbags, cheddar etc... if you want a few blocks of cheese let me know and Ill ask them to bring some more?

The reason you cannot answer is because our country is known for more foods than Hungary (be it for good or bad)... and goulash is also hardly an oustanding culinary creation :-)

yes, that's exactly the one we went to...nothing but oats, piccalilli and chutney left...and I was sooo looking forward to the cheddar. If at all possible then yes please - I'd love a few blocks of cheese. Yummm

The only things that tasted fab in this British food week are the crisps! OMG. I ate so many bags of them over the last week. Luckily there's a swimming pool next to
Lidl to work them all off!

more Chez Moonboot ratings:
the S&V sticks are yum, they even stain your nails yellow!
the roast dinners (we had beef and chicken) are surprisingly ok...not enough spuds though, so we made some of the frozen roast potatoes as a boost.
the apple pies are nice with a cuppa, not much apple in them though.
the caramel slices are super sweet and crumbly so we've got the last packet in the fridge now.
the fish and chips were nice, although the fish pieces were hard to find!!!

This is the first time I have written on this site and it will be the last. I cannot understand when something as little as a British Food week comes along all of the freaks come out of the woodwork to make the most retarded comments. Things like; you must check ingrediants before you buy them because they have too much salt or mince had sugar in and you wanted a refund. Get a fucking life you losers!!!

our Local shop in Kirchheim still has loads of Turkey diners, roast beef diners, roast spuds and Cod portions remaining!
There's a lot of the cheese with the pickle left by me.
Tried the pie last night. 200 degrees and put milk on top when I started cooking it. Worked a treat.

Jun 12 2008, 1:59 pm
My
lidl has lots of turkey dinners but no beef, lots of cod pieces but no fish & chips, cheddar is also gone but lots of the waxed ones, as there are not a whole lot of Brits around here I can only assume the locals took what they perceived as "real" English food.
Tried the cod in batter & it was quite good.

A cold wind blows through the aisles of
Lidl.An empty shortbread wrapper rolls down to the tills where it lodges against an empty shelf. The only sound is the humming of once full freezer cabinets.Only last week this shop was full of nervous, expectant, excited British expats fighting, elbowing and jostling one and other for a glimpse or even maybe a purchase of much loved and much missed frozen products. But all that is a dream now, over and done with, just a memory.Did it happen, was it all real ?
Oh yes it happened,I know for I was there.I saw it with my own eyes, fought my own way to the pickle jars and laughed manicly as my fingers closed around an apple pie box. It´s over now though !! We´ve all gone home, unwrapped, cooked and eaten our much treasured purchases. But Lidl still stands, alone and forgotten. No longer a site of pilgramage. Will we ever return ? Does anybody know?,does anybody care? Maybe one day those mad, manic, glorious days will return, but not yet.
It´s now someone elses turn to flock to this mystical place of consumerism.but we watch and wait, hoping that maybe one day a sign will be seen by many and those wonderful, magical days of British day will be again.
A chapter now closes, the book at an end.Goodbye all who were there for I know you will never forget.

I had the meat pie the other day and to be honest i was very disappointed. The crust was very nice but the filling was mostly gravy. I'm used to the pies being better filled having grown up eating Clarkies pies.
Ode to Clark's Pie
By John Watkins
We sleekit timorous beastie,
To eat ye is a treatstie.
Wi your Golden Broon Coat,
You're like a tiny Welsh boat.
Tis a wondrous joy to unlid ye,
Your rich broon fillin to then see.
To be dipped to be knibb-led,
To be slurped and to be sipp-led.
Forever a beacon of delicious crusty hope,
To be revered and eaten by both genius and dope.
Ye are a Prince amongst pies,
Your legend fadeth not nor ever dies.
no idea why this poem appears to be written with a Scottish accent when it is about welsh pies.
