I bought one of the steak pies but don't know what to drink with it – I don't think I've ever eaten a steak pie without a pint of real ale to accompany it!

Well a bottle of Old Speckled Hen certainly did the job last night. Unfortunately that was the last but one, and the Pedigree has already disappeared (the missus must have nicked it ph34r.gif ).

Ok, heres my review:

Salt and Vinegar Chips: Tastes good, chips are nice and thick, but bad quality spuds... lots of chips have black spots, and some seem like they're from completely skanky potatos: 5/10

Fish and Chips: Chips are big and chuncky, thumbs up! Fish pieces are a bit bland and absolutely tiny; the fish in the middle of each piece of batter is about a third the size of a fish finger. However, desperation for fish and chips takes them to 7/10

Sounds like I need to get to our Lidl in Neuaubing pretty sharpish then...

Nah you'll be fine. I just got back and there's loads left. There can't be that many of "us" in this part of town.
It took me ages to find the meat pies, but otherwise I haven't had so much fun in a German supermarket ever. Or spent so much money in one go.

Doesnt matter how the urban/country comparison is. Lidl doesn't function on the cluster principle.

Just popping into the one in Meisbach so I will in a completely and utterly statistical way test that theory.
kathie
Must just have missed you, just got back myself! you're right, there was a lot left - living in the sticks has its advantages!!
camlough
Bloody hell, I'm going back tomorrow for more of that yummy shortcake *droooool*. The cheese is lovely and I'm just about to make my dinner, potato waffles with baked beans... rolleyes.gif

The Lidl at Unterschleissheim has a stand in the middle section, for the dry goods, the rest is in the freezer and dairy sections. Yum!!
Jeeves
I came home via Gräfelfing huh.gif
Now I'm just wishing I hadn't had so much lunch. All that lovverly nosh in the fridge.

Someone cleaned out the Kirchenstr. Lidl of cheese. They still have the weird looking one with the pickle but the cheddar is gone.

No more fish and chips or shortbread either.

I hope Gouda goes with the pickle because that's all I have.
Rilana
someone fess up, who did it? Who nabbed all the cheese?
g24
I was at the NeuAubing one as well today!! How I managed to spend €140 in Lidl I'll never know!

Will probaby go back tomorrow when I've organised my freezer better!

Dunno, but they cleared out the Freising store as well – they also only had the funny pickle stuff left. Mind you, that's one of the items that you can get in Germany anyway, as discussed elsewhere.

@g24: That's just obsessive! €140?! And you're going back for more?!
chicken pie
pie's in the oven!

anyone tried the Malt Vinegar?
crusoe
Let you know in half an hour or so.
The piccalilli is only gorgeous. Spoon, jar. Jar, spoon.
riri
Just had a teaspoon of the vinegar. Mmmm nice and vinegary. It wouldn't be your saxons but better than nothing. Plus if I had it with chips rather than drinking it, it might then taste much better. Back to my salt and vinegar chip sticks then Ah bliss
scorpio
The apple pies are nice.
Owain Glyndwr
just bought all the cheese of the shelf at the Lidl on Frankfurter Ring.

I can report back that it is fantastic (for the price) and am glad to have my stockpile of 5kg.

THe caramel shortsbreads are heaven, so buy them if you see them.

Hi All
The Lidl in Balanstrase has tons of cheese and the rest of the stuff left. The cheese has a after taste so be careful.
I know what i m buying this week ;o) Lidl shares coz after this week they are sure to go on a bull run...
max
Keydeck
Westendstr still has plenty too.

Got four cheddars which I'm looking forward to trying out and one beef pie which I'm not quite so optimistic about.
Jeeves
Yes the cheese is pretty damn good to my starved taste buds.
I didn't go so much for the caramel, but then I don't really do sweet.

Beef pie was nothing to write home about.

Just spent my 99.99 Euros.

Heaven, going to be a good weekend.

PES

kathie

I am wondering the same thing, I did get an electric ice crusher too though biggrin.gif Did anyone else get any really funny looks, geez everyone in there had full trolleys, guess I was the only one with a trolley full of the same stuff, maybe thats why they were all looking at me! Sadly I couldn't get too much of the frozen stuff (see Tips in special) but did get a couple of each and 4 cheddars, also got the one with pickly things in it. Steak pie was ok, roasties not bad but prefer my own, I may try the roast dinner on Sunday (yes I know i'm sad) I got a turkey and beef one.
crusoe
Not actually funny looks as we descended like wolves on the fold, but the trolley piled with black boxes and bags did merit a (smiling) comment from the cashier.
The cod fillets are great, by the way. Dead dead crispy.
leky
Ooh good I got some of them too, did you put them in the oven or fry em?
Mariposa
Haha, I keep reading this topic because it is fun to read you all getting so excited over Cheddar, pies and whatever (especially after all the 'it's Lidl, it's going to be shite' comments).

(And I mean that in a genuine way.)
denglaender
I had the roast beef dinner today, oh Joy !, not the ideal weather for a roast dinner but when you haven't had one for such a long time that doesn't matter.
The salt & vinegar "sticks", to the best of my taste bud memory are exactly the same as the Marks & Spencers chipsticks, ie good !
Roast chicken lunch tomorrow, followed by a making space in the freezer exercise, followed by another trip to Lidl.
At last, a decent size block of cheddar cheese.
Maybe Christmas hasn't arrived early, but my roast turkey Christmas dinner has, and will put put away in the freezer untill then.
Maybe I was lucky, I was able to find everything I wanted as per the Lidl flyer, pretty much straight away.
BadDoggie
The flavour of the piccalilli isn't bad but the fact that it's less than 40% solids and more than 20% thickeners detracts a bit. The pies are atrocious and the chips are crap.

I wasn't expecting much. It was actually better than I was prepared for since the "American" shit (two weeks ago) also comes from a no-name "Hergestellt für: Lidl Stiftung" supplier and has little in common with the products it tries to mimic.

woof.
Pas
So Miesbach has plenty left.

What the F are they doing selling corned beef though. Have they no shame.

g24, over a 100 euro's on food at lidl! I do now finally accept you're not a weegie. That is unless it was all corned beef.
crusoe
leky, I bunged the cod in the oven, around 200° for 10 minutes or so then added chips (but not Lidl chips) and another 10 - 15 mins at 220°.
Matt T
Curse you Lidl - my diet was going so well. mad.gif

Enjoyed the S&V sticks, but the chips are pretty horrible.

Plenty of cheddar left where I was - think I'll keep the location to myself, though. (OK, Garching.)

Got to see ze Germans commenting with disbelief on the range, which was fun.
Allershausen
I just tried a bit of the cheddar, very nice, perfectly acceptable piece of cheese, I think I may pop in and purchase some more. "I've infiltrated your place of purveyance to negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles"
hamburgbound
Great thread!

Laughed out loud at the image of fellow English people up and down the country staggering out of Lidls with kilos of Cheddar.

I am imagining someone in Lidl statistics department anyalysing this... get me head office on the phone, WE NEED MORE CHEDDAR!!
jyonda
How long do you reckon it's safe to freeze the cheese for? I am planning my Cheddar storage strategy and was thinking one packet per week from the fridge until September then moving to the freezer stock but I'm unsure how long Cheese frozen in June would keep for at an acceptable level.

It would be great to get the input from any experienced Cheese freezers out there. Pie was good.

Tip: Remove the extraneous box packaging from your purchases and place in a sealed plastic bag to increase Freezer capacity and freshness. If necessary cut out the heating instructions and place in the bag.

Well yes, if that's a side effect then I ain't complaining!
tek_604
Made the trip to my local Lidl last night, after I got home from my German class... I don't think I have ever felt quite so British laugh.gif

As commented before, the Chedder Cheese is pretty good, and well priced. But I can't help thinking to myself that maybe it tastes so good because we've all gotten used to the various varieties of soapy Dutch/German cheese! Still, my tastebuds didn't complain too much as they got hit with cheesy goodness last night.

My own personal tip is to try the chedder with Teewurst, as an open sandwich. This is something I actually discovered when I was living back in England, and my girlfriend had sent me some Teewurst. The Lidl chedder works very well!

Not tried anything else yet, its just not the right weather for a pie. Waiting for the weekend to drink some of the juice, with half a beer & half a cider - gonna have a go at converting the locals to the joys of a Sass/Snakebite & Black/Diesel. Most everything else we got (the vinegar and such) all went in the celler, as we still have some stuff we brought back from my last trip home.

The tea bags seem damn expensive (€3 for 80 I think?!). I am running low, and wondering if they make a good cup of tea in 3 minutes, as a tea bag should. All the German "normal tea" brews for like 8 minutes, and it still comes out looking and tasting like I just passed it.

I think for about 3 months, bear in mind that it does become really crumbly when you defrost it, I normally grate it first & that way you can just defrost what you need. Another tip if anyone has one of the vacuum sealers, reseal the cheese after using and it really does last twice as long.

Still a lot cheaper than PG Tips from the local Indian shop. Let us know how they work out.

I would be intruiged to know what they said. I was actualy at a screening on Wednesday where some bright spark had already been to lidl and provided cheeder as the cheese for the buffet. Went down extremely well. So much though that I made sure to get mine early. I also allowed my office hermans to taste, smell, sniff the branston, picallili and cheeses yesterday. Taking into account the standard German lack of culinary adventure was quiet a success.

First time ever it's been available at a cost which doesnt demand you put various female relations on the street to earn extra money.

Edit: one compliment from my son last night was that my short crust apple pies are better. I think I'll therefore avoid the steak pie.
Johnny English
OK OK. I admit the caramel slice was very edible with a glass of milk whilst watching Big Bollox VIII last night. Bit soft maybe, bit sugary maybe, but hit the mark.

You need to put it in the fridge rolleyes.gif

It was a youngish couple, looking specifically at the canned corned beef, saying "das gibst doch nicht!" or something to that effect.

Tastes like Tetley's but I think they were €3.99 for a box of 80 which is pretty pricey.
crusoe
Maybe the couple amazed at the corned beef thought it was the German-style corned beef in aspic. I couldn't understand why anyone would eat that, let alone buy it in cans.
Small Town Boy
Whatever your view on British food, I think we can all agree that tinned corned beef is an embarrassment to our nation.
Johnny English
But how do make corned beef hash without tinned corned beef?
don_riina
Why were Germans shocked at tins of corned beef? It is sold in every Tenglemanns, and has been for years.
