Well now I am peed off as everyone seems to have their stuff early and I can't get there until after work tonight...hope it's not all gone
So the concensus seems to be that the steak pies and cheddar are good, what was the verdict on the scampi & roasties, what about the other stuff? I have loads of Sarsons so i'll skip the vinegar, and is all the stuff in one are or scattered all over the store??

we had the roast spuds last night and they were authentic alright, tasty and convenient but not as good as real roast spuds!
we'd give em 8 out of 10.
@leky the stuff is scattered around, largely amongst the normal stuff

It's scattered all over the place, it took me ages to find everything, in fact I never did find the pickle stuff, but the whole place is pretty chaotic anyway.

the staff at our local
Lidl had only put the frozen and fridge stuff out last night ready for today. they told us the other stuff would be out for today.

My
Lidl didn't seem to bother unpacking the stuff. The dry goods were at the end of the seasonal aisle, where I found a couple other people looking quizically at the selection. Not knowing if they were tters or curious Germans I slunk off to find the steak pie and scampy after grabbing a box of instant oatmeal stuff.
I never did find the roast spuds, but did find fish and chips with the other "tv dinners" near the meat section, the steak pie was with the frozen pizzas, the cheddar with pickle was obvious in the reduced area between the yogurt and the fruit drinks (wtf??), but it took me a couple of looks before I saw plain cheddar was still in the transport box on the shelf.
Made for a change in the hunting and gathering this morning at least.

Mercifully down here it was all in just two locations; all dry, canned and bottled goods together, the cheeses and pies in fridges and freezers beside each other - was in and out of the shop in about ten minutes.

Crickey, I've never bought so much cheese in one go. Those in Unterföhring are going to have to fight over the chedder ;-) Now looking forward to cheese and branston sandwiches for lunch.

I hope they don't know too much about it in
Wiesbaden either...
Has anyone tried the chutney and/or piccallili yet?
I bought 10 packages of cheddar cheese. And now I am thinking of going back to buy more. It freezes well.
My kids will be home from kindergarten now and they will have a steak pie for lunch!

The Salt & Vinegar Sticks are very yummy. Nice tang to them.
The Piccalilli relish was good but not quite what we're used to.
The Sweet Pickle Chutney is very good.
The Baked Beans are OK (they're not Heinz) but they're half the price of the Baked Beans in Kaufland or Konsum and they taste the same, maybe a little more tomatoey.
Also, the Germans seemed to be buying quite a few things as well, so hopefully this will be successful and they'll repeat it again.

From Bogenhausen you're probably easiest going to the one on Kirchenstraße. It runs between Haidenauplatz and Max Weber Platz and is at the Haidenauplatz end.
Don't take all the cheese!

We had the steak pie tonight...in my opinion the 220degrees they tell you to bake it at, is too high. Next time I'll bake it at 180, which is normal for pastry.
We had a very overbaked top...and unbaked base.
I went for 200 degrees with a piece of foil over the top to start with and then took it off for the last 20 mins or so (time adjusted to 1 hour 5 mins to compensate for lower heat). Worked a treat.
QUOTE (Tom34 @ Jun 4 2008, 8:52 pm)

It tasted very nice...you have to look for the steak pieces... but the lovely thick meaty gravy makes up for that.
Mine was surprisingly packed full with meat - pehaps I got some of yours as well
In general, very pleased with all purchases. Bought a load of stuff just to see what it was like but wasn't really expecting it to be up to scratch. 'Thankfully' I have 6 branches in walking distance to choose from and a scattering more within biking distance to stock up from.
I expect
Lidl stock controllers (if such a thing exists in Germany) will notice a pattern of selling out in the cities and larger towns, with much less uptake in the sticks.

Doesnt matter how the urban/country comparison is.

No British-style beer unfortunately.
Aldi had their America Week a couple of weeks ago and had some "Boston Lager". This was quite blatantly just relabelled
Helles though.
Lidl could have passed off some Franconian Landbier as a bottled British ale, which would have been fine with me because that's just as scarce here. I bought one of the steak pies but don't know what to drink with it – I don't think I've ever eaten a steak pie without a pint of real ale to accompany it!
Well I have some John Smiths & old peculiar in the fridge (downstairs one) but you are a bit too far away to get it to you, sorry

If you like Guiness, I think that would go quite well, you could go to the Station in Freising and buy a can of Draught Guiness, I noticed they sell it there a couple of weeks ago.

Well, Freising station is certainly closer than Heidelberg! I'll actually be in Bamberg on Saturday so I guess I'll try and bring back something suitable from there. Otherwise I'll have to raid my Belgian collection...
