No way is it bland if you put a good coating of Gouda cheese on top of it
MissZaubern
Thanks for the tip! There´s a Lidl just down the street from me. Have you checked out foodfromhome ? They´ve got stuff, fair prices, will ship (even frozen pies!) and have a NRW delivery van.

Thanks Again!

No, no, no, NO! Lidl should be burnt to the ground for even daring to offer that selection of crap.

Call yourself British, Sir. Cheddar if you please.

It's bland.

Cheese on top, and woorsestershiure sauce in it when you make it. Anyody who doesn't do that needs to put the potato pealer down slowly and take two steps back out of the kitchen.

Hmm, always thought San Pelegrino was Italian!!

After pubs close many still get a hankering for fish and chips.

I beg to differ, most people I know get a hankering for curry after the pubs close.

So a Hungarian who's native language is English...hmm now how did that come about unsure.gif

@Leky, a hungarian whos native language is english...

Would they be called Granville by anychance?...
seanay
shame theres not yorkshire puddings, or digestive biscuits or dairy milk... oh i miss England now lol
Small Town Boy
There is certainly plenty of good food to be found in the UK, but seriously, Dairy Milk does not fall into that category. The EU didn't even allow them to call it "chocolate" for many a year, so poor is the quality. I would also add Tetleys/PG Tips to the list of popular products that are objectively of appalling quality. You have to look a bit harder to find the really great food in Britain.

Corrected it for you. Personally I hate milk chocolate.
Small Town Boy
Chocolate snobs indeed argue that milk chocolate isn't chocolate at all. I don't agree with that; one can get very good milk chocolate, in my opinion. But Dairy Milk is a big step below even bad milk chocolate, with barely 10% cocoa and oozing in cocoa butter and sugar.

Of course there was political lobbying involved with the EU ban, but who can blame the other producers? They make a product that costs much more to produce but that shares the same title as Cadbury's products, so you can't really blame them for wanting the British ersatz-chocolate to be given a different label.

Hi! I took a look at Lidl´s website. The things don´t look so great! As for flapjacks, I am not sure but I think you can get them at the bigger Edekas, like the one at the airport or the one in Taufkirchen.

You can make that at home! :-D

Hope the cheddar is decent, the price for it in other places is fucking ridiculous. I bet the pies will be rank

I hope so too... miss Cheddar Cheese :-)
Was told you can freeze cheese - hope it doesn't change the texture/flavour... Might have to stock up! :-)

QUOTE (madgibson @ May 28 2008, 9:19 am) *
Thanks for the tip Mik! Really miss pies here...but as Mr Mosh says...they might not be the real McCoy or up to much.

You can make them at home!

QUOTE (gideon @ May 28 2008, 2:19 pm) *
Right went to lidl this lunch and picked up the list of stuff. Most of it is crap to be honest, basicly TV dinner Roast Beef obviously produced for chavs who shop in lidl in the UK. I mean who the hell is going to by frozen roast potatoes? Or worse still frozen fish and chips? Or Potatoe waffles for those who miss them?

Who the hell eats those crappy microwave meals anyway??? YUK!
The Germans have such a bad impression of British food as it is - I think many of these things that Lidl are selling are hardly going to help change that! :-}

QUOTE (gideon @ May 28 2008, 2:19 pm) *
Mint sauce for €0.89

You can make that at home! :-)

QUOTE (madgibson @ May 29 2008, 8:40 am) *
Are they like Fray Bentos pies then? i.e. in a tin. If so, I'll not be buying any after all!

That wouldn't be a bad idea! I love those things! :-D

QUOTE (Allershausen @ May 29 2008, 12:04 pm) *
Yes it says that the British are prepared to try new things and experiment with their food. Curry may well be the most popular food, although i think you'll find it's the most popular take away food, but that doesn't mean they've stopped eating roast beef and Fish and chips.

Actually, let's not forget that we once had a great empire and our interest in curries probably stems from our presence in India.
We are actually pretty open-minded about trying new things... In Bavaria they tend to be a bit nervous about trying new things (which seems to be changing slowly).

I am from Hungary.

Why is Opus getting his knickers in such a twist about British food?

You can't please everyone and probably not everyone likes Goulash. Opus, if you don't like British food, don't eat it... Actually, Hungary is only really known for Goulash - at least people around the world know us for Fish & Chips, Cakes & Scones & Tea, Puddings, Plum Pudding, Pies, Haggis, Roast Beef (and English breakfasts)! Actually so well known that the French sometimes call us "les rosbifs" LOL

One thing to note, we also don't have much in the way of English restaurants in England either, so why would you expect them around the world? We tend to eat good homely British cooking at home or as pub meals. We tend to eat in restaurants if we want to try something from another country.

Actually, whenever I make British dishes for "foreigners" (such as Apricot Crumble, Steak & Ale Pie, Christmas Cake), they have always been impressed... :-) They are actually a well-kept secret and you need to experience it with a British family to appreciate it... You can hardly judge British cuisine based on 2 experiences of Shepherd's Pie and Haggis! Try going to England some time to educate yourself...

QUOTE (chicken pie @ May 31 2008, 2:02 pm) *
anyone got a good recipe for roast potatoes - never seem to get them crispy enough!

You need to have the right potatoes... I find that a lot of the potatoes here don't quite have the same texture as back home when roasted...

ah you can get some blinding roasties with the spuds here. you just have to ask for the mega-mehlige kartoffeln.

God help us. I just went to the LIDL website to see what is on offer. Miserable selection of crap basically, and we seem to have spent 14 pages debating the subject.

Sounds like there is still some suppressed demand for better supermarket products to me. Or maybe we are all just bored.

I was gonna instruct her indoors what to purchase...or even go myself...but having looked at the goodies I shall save my beer tokens for a more meaningful purpose.
Allershausen
This is all to the good, the less people go, the more there is for me! I don't care if you lot don't like it, I will be buying some of the goodies and while you lot are all fart arsing about making everything from scratch, I shall be tucking into mine and enjoying every minute. (I hope) tongue.gif

British food least popular in Europe

Traditional British dishes such as spotted dick have come bottom in a European food table.

Just three per cent of continentals admire our fare while Italian cuisine is their favourite – with 60 per cent of the vote.

And just five per cent of Britons want to master national dishes, the poll by Apetina cheese found.

I am personally boycotting Lidl due to their Stasi-like illegal in-house spying, human rights violations and poor and discriminating treatment of their employees. Too many other good quality, cheap alternatives.
Mik Dickinson
You my friend have been watching too much German tele and reading too many German newspapers.I know all 4 women that work at our Lidl and all are happy about it.One even swapped from Aldis to start at Lidl.Right then the cheddar cheese is good. The cheese and pickle is a personal favourite you either like it or not and later on when Christine gets all the stuff out then i am going to get some blackberry juice.Mix it with fizzy mineral water and hope for something like Ribena.
DDBug
I suppose I will see how many brits live in my neighborhood at the lidl tomorrow.

Regardless, staatsanwalt will be opening an official investigation and bringing charges against about hiring policies, unauthorized survellience and general forms of "mobbing". I guess he has been viewing and reading too much as well. Damn reading! tongue.gif

Not bothered C.C as our girls at Lidl are happy and they do a good job.I got the stuff yesterday out of the coolroom before it went on the shelves.Today i went up and she told me to go in there and get some cheddar. The boss came in and asked me what it was all about.Bought some cheddar cheese and opened it at the checkout where they both tried it and the promptly put some to the side for themselves. As to the mobbing side well i reckon we are talking about certain managers in certain Lidl stores.

LOL kartofelnwaffeln..

Holy shit, blackcurrent juice... I am now only a half pint of cider away from a diesal..

That malt vinegar looks like urine!
Guy
Got some of the Hezzervood malt vinegar - it's not quite as pale as in the photo, they must have backlit it.

The only thing I didn't see in our local was the scampi.
Allershausen
I thought this started tomorrow, how come your all getting the stuff today? Should I pop into Lidl on my way home?
Guy
Yeah, but once Mik mentioned it, I thought I'd give it a go. Guess the Lidl staff want to go home early tonight.
Mik Dickinson
We have the scampi and i can tell you guys if the slae of the english stuff does well then Lidl may do it more often

just was in Lidl, they have started selling the stuff already! Not everything is on the shelves though! mmmhh cheddar!

I have scampi and instant roast potatoes in the oven right now.

We'll see if it was worth walking the length of Kirchenstr. in the rain to get there.
Moonboot

Wife did have it up too high in the oven so the base was a bit floppy.

We had the steak pie tonight...in my opinion the 220degrees they tell you to bake it at, is too high. Next time I'll bake it at 180, which is normal for pastry.
We had a very overbaked top...and unbaked base.

It tasted very nice...you have to look for the steak pieces... but the lovely thick meaty gravy makes up for that.
Out of 10 , I'll give it a 7
On the box they wrote ' succulent and tasty' and I fully agree.
Mrs Tom34
Guy
Yeah, we liked the steak pie too. Same result though, soggy base.
Allershausen
I went there there this evening and realised that I've never been in a Lidl before! It was an interesting experience, makes Penny Markt seem like Waitrose. There were some very odd people wandering around I can tell you. However, I bought some cheese and a couple of pies and two bags of roast potatoes. I wanted to buy a jar of the fake Branston Pickle but I couldn't find it and the only employee appeared to be the girl on the till, who was a bit busy so I'll go to the Lidl in Freising on Saturday. I had one of the pies for dinner with some of the roast spuds and it was very tasty, although I think, as Mrs Tom34 said the temperature was too high and the crust got a little burnt and the base was a bit soggy. I'm looking forward to tasting the cheese.

Lidl International is taking all this stuff very seriously (you decide if it's because they feel bad or because they're worried it'll reflect in lower sales figures!) and immediate changes have been made to procedures (CCTV in all 7000 stores and 150 Regional Distribution Centres has been adjusted to ensure it no longer monitors certain areas of the warehouse). Written statements have been made by the boards of directors of all Lidl national companies (Lidl GB GmbH, Lidl Ireland GmbH etc. etc.) outlining what Lidl Deutschland GmbH has been accused of and what it has actually been up to. In fairness to Lidl the CCTV monitors in all stores are clearly visible (located in the cafeteria) to all staff so they know what is being recorded. Work practices have changed immensely in Lidl across Europe in recent years especially in the last 12 months. In the old days staff timesheets were filled in by warehouse/store managers (who were measured on how many staff hours were used in their warehouses/stores) and could end up being 'shy' of the mark. Lidl abolished this and now all store and warehouse employees clock in and out and are paid to the minute-they control their own timekeeping now. There's been lots of these little changes to make sure employees are treated better and IMHO the store and warehouse staff on the 'bottom rung' are treated quite well (if even one employee in a store fails to get their minimum 11 hour rest between shifts the store manager and district manager must make their way to head office and explain to the Regional Director) and are paid more than the going rate for retail/warehouse work. HOWEVER... management are still often treated like sh!te and only the money keeps a lot of them working for the company but I know this isn't unique to Lidl. Anyway...lots of ex Lidl managers have made their way into more traditional supermarkets as they try to drive their cost base down by emulating Lidl's recipe where possible. Sorry for the meandering post...carry on about the cheddar!
