Saharan sand currently in the air

Blowing across southern and central Germany

If you think that the air looks opaque and smudgy you're right, we are getting a load of Sahara sand with the southerly winds. A sheet of sand app. 320km wide is crossing Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Thuringia at a height of app. 3km. So give your cars a quick rinse before it scours away that snazzy paintjob.

Sand is inert, you can't be alergic to it.

The link looks as if it's out of date, but the news isn't. The sky from where I'm currently sitting in Munich does have a slight sandy colour to it.

Why is the sand from the Sahara allowed to enter Munich?
To my knowledge the Sahara has no 'Feinstaubplakette'.
If the sand comes all the way from Africa there must be hell of a lot of particulate matter smaller than 10 microns.

Oh! That will make for a killer sunset / dusk light today!!

Not to mention, does it have a valid Aufenthaltserlaubnis?

Urgh, I had about three articles open and copied the wrong one. Now the radio news article I was reading yesterday is gone.

No probs... lots of links with info in German about Saharan sand.

Hitze und Sand über Deutschland
QUOTE (Welt Online @ May 27 2008, 11:54 am)
Eine ungewöhnliche Großwetterlage herrscht momentan in Deutschland. Schuld daran ist ein Hoch, dass direkt aus der Sahara kommt und sogar Wüstensand nach Europa transportiert.

rough translation:
There's currently an unusual weather situation in Germany. To blame is a high that is directly from the Sahara, and even desert sand is being transported to Europe.

edit: got beaten to it... I type too slow! dry.gif
