Summer has started and it is time for open water swimming. I was at the Feringee See last evening and found a number of swimmers a few with wetsuites(assuming triathelets) Here is some information about the lakes which are around Munich. Probably this can be a thread for like minded people to meet up as we have for Triathlon training, Racer biking, Mountain biking etc...
Information is available in the the weblink

Moosach is SE (South East) or NW (North West)?
Is it possible to get there with S1 line (towards Freising). How is the water quality?

swim back and forth across the Pilsensee, I loved living on that lake... (S5 to Seefeld, the lake's within sight of the platform)
For me, it's only warm enough to do that for about 2 weeks in Bavaria.

Steinsee is located near Moosach bei Grafing, County of Ebersberg (SouthEast), not Moosach on S1 (Munich-North)

And as to the water quality you do not have to worry.Any place in Germany that is open for swimming is checked on a regular basis.

Nataris : you've missed off a lot ... but yes the Steinsee is a gem. Also Heimstettensee is fairly good, Reimersee (BUGA) is cold but very good water quality (both in East Munich) Ferringersee has bouys out so helps with navigation (again East). The rowing lake is also a possibility for those in North Munich. Karlsfeld lake for those in North West. Around Erding and Markt Schwaben there are lots of great lakes. I know of none south of Munich, but of course Ostersee, Woerthsee and the 2 biggies in the west are all good...

Northwest:
Langwieder SeeA smaller lake in the same park also has a nudist area...

@DickyD: Thanks for the info. Reimersee (BUGA) seems to be interesting since it has 1000 mts long stretch and the water is clear. I think it would be little crowded during weekend. I try this place on sunday. I hope there is no opening or closing hours? I
Thanks once again

lakes are always open ... but not always with lifeguards ...
may be I shouldn't say but in 2006 a friend of mine swam into a dead body in the Ferringersee ... the dead person had escaped from a home for the mentally handicaped and had drowned in the lake ... 4/5 days earlier... !!!
So it's not always a fish between you toes :-)
see you in a lake soon ...

I know a little secret Rangierbahnhofsee, but I don't know if I want to spread the secret?
Actually, I was thinking about posting a thread on this very subject, but with a twist. I was thinking about having a day at the lake and just let people show up at a particular spot.
My thoughts:
Lake
Grill
Pets allowed
FKK or not
On a Saturday
Feldmochinger See has all this. A pets allowed and grilling area that straddles two beach areas (one FKK and one not) with toilets in the middle. There is also a sand volleyball area and a concession stand nearby. The deal would be that there would be grills going and people bring what they want to toss on the grill. Basically individual picnics with a community grill going.
If the weather is nice, my son and I will be there anyway and I could easily haul a portable grill along. If there are others there with dogs, I could bring the two pooches too.

ickinger stausee is just the best, especially as I have access to a house in the woods there, but it is great and I recommend it

Party at Iain & Siobhan's! Woohooo!
Tried Lerchenauersee on the weekend. Very nice, clean water and there appeared to be a lifeguard on duty. There's plenty of grass to laze around on, and for the triathletes, a nice path going round the lake, so swim+run training is possible.
It took about 10min to get there by bike from Schwabing.

I was at BUGA this week. Another great place to swim. It is good for training because the stretch from one end to the other is 680mts. So if you can swim to and fro you can complete the swimming part in the Olypic Distance

For the BUGA park with the Riemer See: Yes, go to
Messestadt West on the Ubahn. Its around a 8 - 15 minute walk south into the park, depending on your speed. You also walk past a shopping centre (Riemer Arkaden), with a number of different restaurants and cafes that are also open on Sunday. We were there last weekend, simply glorious.
You can also take the Sbahn (S4) to Gronsdorf and walk north towards the park, it takes 10 - 15 minutes.

1 small question: These lakes are cleaned for maintenance? I mean with the water being stagnant is there any purification or cleaning. After having tried Ferigee see a few times I get red patches or a few rashes in the body immeditaely after the swim and goes off in 24 hours.

The Feringasee is a Baggersee, which means its an exhausted quarry which has filled with water. So its kinda unnatural. I imagine there's very little vegetation/fishes to clean the water.
The Feldmochingersee is natural, and as far as I know it has no water flowing in. I suspect its fed by an underwater acquifier because if you dive down at the bio part between the two FKK sections, the water gets really cold. And there is water flowing out.

Don't know about the other ones, but I know the BUGA lake (aka Riemer See) is cleaned. The water is also regularly tested, that's why it get the category swimming lake (Badesee). I read all about it a while back, but can't find the text any more.
Ok, just looked at "Riemer See" under Wikipedia, and came up with the following. So yes, the water is cleaned ...
"Über einen Überlauf am Westende des Sees fließt überschüssiges Wasser ab, wird in den Versickerungsbecken gereinigt und dem Grundwasser wieder zugeführt. Durch diesen Wasseraustausch wird eine gleich bleibende Qualität des Wassers sichergestellt."

I was at Ferigeesee last afternoon between 2.30 to 4 and I happened to see another triathlete (with orange cap) doing some good training
Was it DickyD or Jorgan? Both are visitors to this lake as in the triathlon training thread..
