Where to live in and around Stuttgart

Places within commuting distance from AFRICOM

I've accepted a position with AFRICOM and I'll be re-locating to the Stuttgart area within 90 days. I need to find a place within 1/2 hour commuting distance from my work. I've read about Ludwigsburg and Marbach being great places to live and possibly within that "distance range" that I'm looking for. Any other suggestions? No family with me. Thanks.

I personally like Stuttgart Ost. If you are not very busy, I would suggest living closer to the city... it can get pretty boring in the outskirts. Stuttgart West, Ost, Sud and Mitte are nice... and even Nord... people have said Bad Cannstantt is nice, but I'm not a fan of it. I have friends that live in the outskirts and hate it because it's boring, but if you have kids or like being alone a lot, it can be quite pleasant. - but not if your kids are teenagers and need friends. Either case, Ludwigsburg is nice. Good luck!

I must say, everywhere in and around Stuttgart is real nice. There aren't any "bad" areas of town. My friend (native German) showed me around the "ghettos" of Stuttgart, and they're not even that bad. So really, I think the best choice would be to just find a home close to work. Stuttgart is a major city, but it's not very big... not too big, not too small.

Personally, I do like Bad Canstatt. It is very well connected with many trains, subways, and busses, as well as plenty of shopping and close to the city center and Vaihingen (where Patch is) as well.

But, if you really prefer to live in the outskirts, my favorite suburb is Herrenberg. (can't really call it a suburb, because it's not a bedroom-community suburb in the American sense of the word). Very quaint, small, but not too small, frequent train connection to the city, short driving distance to Vaihingen, and, well, it's just nice. It's old, with a historic Altstadt, great walking, everything. But, I don't know how many rentable apartments exist in Herrenberg, it feels more like a small "village". But then again, I've, in my free time, visited almost every little city in the Stuttgart region, and can say you will not go wrong with any city. Even if you are further away, the public transit is excellent (I've heard it's among the best in Germany, actually. And from the American "public transit" we're used to, this place is a whoooole lot better.)

Ludwigsburg is pretty as well. It's a relatively large city (compared to the other suburbs of Stuttgart), there's the huge Schloss there, not far from Stuttgart. Personally, I didn't like Marbach too much. It's also very historic, small, old Altstadt, nice location on the Neckar River. But, for some reason, wasn't among my favorites. (On the other hand, I didn't dislike the city either.)

But do you want to commute 30 minutes, when there's plenty of places within a 10-minute walking distance? By American standards, 30 minute car commute is a short commute, but by Stuttgart standards, it's on the longer side.

I am a teenager, so perhaps I'm giving you a teenager's point of view, but really, you can't go wrong around here. I've lived here for almost a year, and I love it.

Thanks for the responses. I'm learning a lot.

We live in Echterdingen, near the airport, and the drive is easy and short. There are great places to eat and close to everything. Hope that helps.
