i did a search on "bread" and i could not find much, aside from an individual asking about "honey bread". i was wondering if people buy their bread while grocery shopping, or whenever you see bakeries, or if there are particular stores you visit .. today i got lost around senefelderplatz and found this organic food store that sold bread in one corner and it was sooo good. so where do you buy your bread? anywhere?

You haven't searched hard enough.

uh well in that case you could have simply ignored my post, that way it would have easily floated off to next page

o well?

by the way, i did a search specific to berlin, and i did not find much other than the honey bread thread so get off my case

You might have a little trouble getting to my favourite bakery - Holzofabeck Eichberg in Switzerland. Best stuff I've tasted anywhere in the world I've been so far. The baker is Swiss but his wife is Canadian, and both speak fluent English. We lived nearby for a few years, and I still stop by when I'm in the area. Great tea shop, too! Worth a little detour if you ever find yourself in the neighbourhood. smile.gif

(yeah... I know... it's a life in Berlin thread... tongue.gif )

Cast around in your neighborhood until you find bakers who bake their bread fresh on the premises. Try each and every variety and then try to decide which one is best.

It's amazing that after 7 posts no one has actually managed to answer the question posited at the beginning of this thread. For excellent bread go to Bäckerei Wiedemann on Friedrichstrasse, they do Kurbisbrot and Brötchen and other Vollkorn type breads. The cakes are pretty good, but there a better places to go for those as well.

Do the other city forums suffer from this problem of non-locals giving totally unhelpful replies to questions? It seems to happen all the time in the Berlin forum... rolleyes.gif

I like the bread from the UFA Fabrik which is sold at various weekly markets and bio-markts, but that's not to say it is "the best." I haven't found any bread here that would make me go out of my way to obtain it, yet.

thanks fruitlassie & FristCitizen! i'll try those places next week.

I don't know the name, but the bakery on the corner of Kuglerstrasse/Varnhagenstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg is hands down the best bakery in Berlin in my opinion. It's an old Ossi bakery, very old school. Everything there is amazing, especially the Mehrkornbrot.
You won't be dissappointed!

There´s a small bakery in Feldafing, but I guess it doesn´t help you guys there in Berlin, does it?
Well, anyway, the baker only bakes a certain amount of bread each moring and then goes off to the golf course for the rest of the day! the bread is wonderful, whatever you buy, it´s FRESH, FRESH, FRESH, with that hand-made smell, and well worth getting up early for if you happen to be in the area - it´s just by the church on the way down to meet Seestrasse - try it if you can, you won´t regret it!!!

I like buying bread from the big bakery near the southbound Raabestr. bus stop on Lichtenrader Damm. Lecker

However, this recommedation is of limited use as I doubt many Berlin Toytowners (with the exception of Steve Shadforth who I credit with the intelligence to sort out his own preferred bread supply in his own neighbourhood) would find that a convieniet location. cool.gif

Lichtenrader Damm is probably more convenient for most here in the Berlin forum than Feldafing (???) or Switzerland!

Okay, this is a thread about how to find bread in Germany. Then there is one asking why there aren't any fortified castles there. What's next? Anybody having any trouble finding lager, Mercs or unfriendly shop personal? :-)
