Just noticed, if you type 'ikea' in the address bar it finds the website, works with most things.
Have tried 'google', 'fhm', 'bbc' etc.
Saves typing all those www's

It's not quite as straightforward as that. These are Firefox "Quick Searches". You simply enter a verb and a parameter in the address bar. Default verbs are
Google - sends the parameter to Googles search engine
Goto - displays the results of Googles "I'm feeling lucky"
Dict - passes the parameter to the dictionary.com search
Quot - passes the parameter to Googles stock quote
If you enter a non-valid URL into the taskbar, then "Goto" is assumed so you get the reuslt of Googles "I'm feeling lucky" search. If the word/parameter is a common webword, such as Ikea then google transfers you to the
Ikea website for example
You can add additional verbs via bookmarks, by adding "%s" to the bookmarked URL and a Keyword to define the accepted verb...

A really good extension is
SmartSearch. It's similar to DictionarySearch and the like except that it uses your quicksearch bookmarks. So, to add a new search engine, you simply create a new quicksearch bookmark.
Here are two very useful quicksearches for Munich:
MVV (Address):
http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/de/home/fahrgas...UR_ADDRESS_HEREand MVV (Stop):
http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/de/home/fahrgas...UR_ADDRESS_HERESimply replace YOUR_ADDRESS_HERE at the end of both URLs by your address (eg. "Somestra%DFe%2021" without the quotes -- %DF stands for ß, %20 stands for space). Now you can highlight an address or the name of a stop and select either MVV (Address) or MVV (Stop) from the SmartSearch menu to look up how to get there without having to go through the annoying
MVV website.
Also check out
Greasemonkey, it's
amazing.

After all the hoopla about the "big switch" to Firefox - this came along in another group I read. Just thought I would pass it on.

Help ! I am currently looking for an alternative to Firefox - but one that
has tabbed browsing, a built-in RSS reader and that does not occupy
too much RAM.
My problem with Firefox is that it uses a lot of memory. Yesterday I
was running Firefox and 7-zip simultaneously on my rather new laptop
(purchased end of last year) and at some point, the computer froze
until 7-zip had completed the extraction process of a large rar file.
When I checked the CPU and memory usage, I found that Firefox was
(probably) the cause for this. Although I frequently run RAM2Free,
Firefox very often occupies memory space that it won't free until I
manually kill the process.
All in all, I am very satisfied with Firefox. I just find it annoying
that it freezes my PC when I expect it the least.
I have tried Opera, which IMHO is a fine browser, I just cannot get
used to the way it handles bookmarks. I always manage to open up some
sidebar that just won't disappear afterwards.
Any idea? I have already tried the Mozilla browser, but IMHO the
problem with the memory usage is the same although I haven't checked
this thoroughly.

In Firefox, the more open tabs, the greater the memory usage. I did a side-by-side comparison between IE6 and Firefox Deer Park 2 (the latest alpha) - Firefox comes in at 10 percent higher memory usage when displaying the same page - 22 meg instead of 20.
A new lappie should have at least 512 meg of ram - I personally find that third-party apps to clear memory and screw around with other system settings just slow down my computer. You can make sure that apps are set to completely unload when they close down - unless you're in and out of an application all day... also how many programs are in your autostart folder? C-A-D and another look at the Task manager will reveal all.
You can easily save the 2 meg that FF is chewing extra, and more, by killing unnecessary stuff like the java update applet, and the "quickstarters" so beloved of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat reader 7, OpenOffice, RealPlayer, Winamp, iTunes, etc etc etc. If you know what you're doing, then under HK_L_M/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run or services.msc you will find several memory-wasting applications that can safely be deleted, or set to manual. Warning, if you don't know what something does, Google it to find out before you fiddle.
@oli2000 - Firefox 1.1 will have a feature under the Help menu called Report Broken Web Site. Firefox/mozilla and many alt.browsers adhere to the established HTML standards, whereas IE does not. You could try the tool for FF where it claims to be IE (this doesn't always work with some Linux flavors and Firefox), or even complain to your bank - because if it's IE-only then you're not going to get in, using Linux.

Mozilla have said that all versions of FF below 1.0.3 are not safe, so you should upgrade. Latest version is 1.0.4.

Just installed the new version. Is actually not the full, only RC3, but looks really nice, and whether something has happened with the work proxy, but it seems just a little faster now...
Just trying out the Firefox V3 rc1 and it flies. It really does seem to render quicker than anything I've tried before. Not totally sold on the new look but I'll probably get used to it.

Yeh, Firefox 3 is such a big improvement over Firefox 2. I would curse Firefox 2 all day long, it just loved to suck memory and never give it back to the system which eventually ended in your machine crashing. Firefox 3 is fast and stable as hell so far.
I still don't think it's as quick as Opera though.

Ha ha ha, not if your clients are fuckwit sales guys, who downloaded firefoy because they are German, and therefore somehow blame Microsoft for George Bush and the war on terror*. Piddling about with the firefox config is about as likely as them being able to not make a stupid fake laugh when a client makes a shitty gag.

You shouldn't be using VBScript (unless you're a girl) because it's for girls. Use Javascript and then the excellent Firebug debugger, which has simply no decent equivilant in IE.

Or unless you are supporting legacy apps smothered in VBscript that you really cannot be arsed to upgrade. I'm working with people that still think that office macros and MS access are the answer to everything. Seriously.
Actually come to think of it, I think alot of the inhouse vbscript was indeed written by a girl. Girls should not be writing any code, full stop.

I have been using 3.0 for week or so now and one thing is really pissing me off. I have 6 tabs set up that load automatically when i open FF. When doing so at work I have to enter a proxy authentication. In the old version I had to enter it once and it was then remembered for next time so i only needed to hit enter. With 3.0 I have to enter the user name and password for EVERY TAB and it doesn't remember them, despite asking if it should. Is there a setting i need to change or is this a glitch I'll have to live with?

Agree, the pages seem to render a lot quicker than 2.x. Haven't used it enough to find any problems...except the AVG 8.0 plugins don't seem to work, which may or may not be a bad thing.

I downloaded it this morning and it seems to be working well. A couple of my extras have stopped working (a password manager and download assistant) but otherwise it seems fine. The new 'awesome' bar is a bit annoying at the moment, but it is supposed to learn. It also seems to use less CPU when just idling (displaying gmail, etc)

One value of the awesome bar is that it is intuitive. Regularly entering "t" for "Toytown" will bring it to the top of the dropdown list.

i dont even have explorer on my pc. firefox wins hands down . but i have been using opera lately which has this really cool speed dial function

Anybody else finding Firefox 3 crashes quite often? Perhaps mainly when using youtube?
Got a feeling there is a memory leak in there somewhere.

What I've noticed is that sometimes I cannot move the cursor for some time, it's like the cursor is frozen (a lot of times when I am browsing sites with YouTube videos). I can still right-click using the keyboard (not the mouse) and type, so my computer hasn't actually frozen. Sometimes takes a minute or two until I can use the cursor again. Quite odd as I never had this problem with any previous versions of FF. Anyone else have this problem or advice on how to fix it?)
Personally I'm finding firefox 3 an unstable piece of crap.
Just loaded IE 8 Beta 2.
Initial reaction. Quick, probably as quick as firefox.
Better roadtest the 'porn mode'.

Really? I've been running Firefox 3.0.1 on 1) Windows Vista, 2) Windows XP Pro and 3) Mac OS X and find it fantastic!! The only reported crashes occur when I close the browser using the "X" in the upper right-hand corner rather than "Exit." The add-ons I find absolutely brilliant!! There are soooooooo many more things that you can do with Firefox, IMHO.
I'm finding if I have Toytown , Facebook and Hotmail all open at the same time it hangs. Often.
I far prefer the look and feel of Firefox but since I upgraded it's not been good. I know there were issues with flash but I loaded the latest.

still never had firefox crash...ever. Use it at work on XP as well and have it installed on Vista, although that is no real test as I probably only fire Vista up every 2 months or so.
Quite like the "Slice" feature of the new IE beta, but I am sure someone will write an addon to do it in FF soon enough
