Good supermarkets on the U5 U-Bahn line

East of Odeonsplatz and very close to the station

Morning,
I live in Shwabing just east of that Arc monument slightly North of Universitat. As far as I can work out the nearest supermarket is a small Tenglemann and there aren't any big ones anywhere close (please correct me if I'm wrong on that one)
So... my idea was to get off the UBahn on the way home and do my shopping.
Question is; which UBahn stop east of Odeonsplatz has the closest half-decent supermarket?
I know there are a few shops at Ostbanhof but maybe there's a better alternative?

Thanks for you help
Oliver
Carm
you want a decent supermarket in Germany? laugh.gif

but you can try

from Ostbahnhof about a 5 min walk is the big VMarkt,
or down Weissenbergstr is a Norma, a Plus, and a larger Tengelmann (not the first one right by Kaufring)
at Orleanspl in the FunfHof is a large Rewe.

But if you live near the Uni on Schellingstr there is a larger Plus,

Annoying reply that won't give you an easy solution but. You could try to start biking to work (if it's under a 50 minute bike ride) or bike part way to work and then jump on a ubahn. You will find so many different stores, etc along the way. As an added side bonus it may actually be a bit healthy for you.

There aren't any BIG grocery stores near where you live, but there are plenty of stores. Are you talking about the Tengelmann on Türkenstr near Blütenstr? There is a bigger Tengelmann just a couple blocks south on Türkenstr, just south of Schellingstr. There is also a fairly large Plus on Schellingstr, between Türken and Barerstr. There's ANOTHER Tengelmann on the corner of Barer and Schellingstr. And there's a nice organic grocery store south of that on Barerstr.

Or change your route home so you go through Rosenheimer Platz and go shopping at the Aldi or Hit in the station, at the west end.

Don't try going to them today though, they'll be closed, it's a holiday!*

(Well it is for most people, some of are single handedly keeping the German economy running!)

PEP, Neuperlach Zetrum, it's on the U5 and has 3 massive supermarkets in the basement. Hit, Aldi and Kaufhaus.

Ok, not directly between your home and work, but definitley worth a butchers.

There is a quite large Rewe under the Funfhofe (Odeonsplatz station).

I live in the same neighborhood. There is a second, bigger and somewhat better Tenglemann on Tuerkenstr. between Amalien and Schellingstr. There is also a rather grungy Plus just off Tuerkenstr. on Schelling. There is a good Rewe in the funf hofe (crossposted), past the camper store and down the stairs. The Elisabethmarkt is also very close to you, that's a really nice market -- like a less expensive Viktualienmarkt.

Lehel and Max-Weber-Platz stations have no supermarkets, neither directly at the stations nor in short walking distance around them.
As noted above, there are a couple of stores around Ostbahnhof: just walk down Weissenburger Strasse and there are 2 Tengelmann's.

Also, this fall, a brand-new Tengelmann will be opening at the Innsbrucker Ring station (it's currently under construction).

If you want a broad selection and not the typically german little-corner-store-branded-as-supermarket-selection, there's either HIT at Rosenheimer Platz (connect with tram 15/25 to/from Max-Weber-Platz U5) or another HIT at Neuperlach Zentrum, in the basement of the PEP shopping center.

Good luck, grocery shopping in Munich can be hard!

Thanks for your help everyone.
Will look for some of these places over the coming weeks...wish I had a blooming car though...buying bottles of beer from the corner shop costs loads more than in the big supermarket.
Trying to get my flatmate to commit to doing a regular "heavy bottles" run smile.gif
Keydeck
You could have it delivered instead.

If you plan to shop near Neuperlach Zentrum, take a look at Kaufland. Much bigger and more selection compared to other supermarkets mentioned in this thread.

There are 2 Tenglemen Supermarkets near Lehel U-Bahn. One is small and the other smaller. The smaller one is opposite the BRK, and the bigger one is opposite the Sanfrancisco coffeeshop. I reckon both are within 200m of the U-Bahn exits.

Stopped by Neuperlach PEP on Friday afternoon...that looks like it could be ideal for shopping on the way home, close to the exit and most things availble there.
Only downside is it was a bit chavvy, I had grown to think everyone in Munich is beautiful and sophisticated wink.gif
Thanks for help

As Keydeck said before, why don't you have these heavy bottles delivered:
http://www.getraenke-kreidl.de/
prices for 20-bottle crates, including delivery, exluding VAT, so add 19%: http://www.getraenke-kreidl.de/customer_public/print_all.asp
You don't even have to be home, they take away the empty bottles you put in front of your door and replace them with full ones.
