My husband has been offered a position in Basel, and we are thinking about living in Weil am Rhein. Is there anyone on TT that lives there, has lived there, or can give us an idea about rent, locations, community, that sort of thing?

My husband has lived in Basel and Mulhouse but we would really like to continue living in Germany. Any info at all would be great. Thanks!

Hi Mary. I live in Lörrach, which is just east of Weil, and also work in Basel.

There are a couple of nice areas in Weil that you might consider, but I would avoid the area right on the border (Friedlingen, for example) since that is a light industrial area and a bit rough (at least, rough by local standards). Weil itself is not too bad, but in the end we chose Lörrach. Lörrach has more facilities, is a bit bigger, a bit quieter (which was important for us since we've just had a baby), and IMO nicer in general. Very happy here.

Both Weil and Lörrach have S-Bahn and bus connections to each other and to Basel. Plenty of decent cyclepaths, too.

For finding somewhere to live, a good place to start is the rentals section of the Badische Zeitung. I think this is where we found our place.

As for a community, there is a large English-speaking community in Basel. See englishforum.ch

Dodger,

I am Marymanu's husband. Thank you very much for the info. I will be in and around Basel this weekend looking around some and will check out Lörrach. I have been there a few times, but just for the Milka factory outlet - buying chocolate to send home. What about Saturday produce markets - plentiful in Lörrach? I thought about checking some out this weekend to get the feel of the place.

Thanks again,
Matt

Hi Matt,

So far I've only been here for a few months - and have not even gotten around to visiting the Milka factory yet. Shameful, I know.

There are plenty of markets in and around Lörrach and the produce that I've seen has been very good. Here is some info about the Wochenmärkte.

I'm off now to visit one of the many fine pubs in Basel (maybe more than one, you never know) but if there's anything else I can do to help, I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Simon
