Strange animals running through the streets - Hamburg

Beech martens (known in German as "Marder")
Sami
Last night when walking home from a friend's place at about 3 or 4 am I was startled by a rustling in the hedges - then saw what I initially thought were a couple of cats running from under a hedge underneath a car. However, in the couple of seconds I could see them I realised they weren't cats - they were the same size as the average moggy but looked more like a cross between a squirrel and a fox. Under the orange streetlights I couldn't really tell what colour they were meant to be, but they looked like a sorta tan/brown color, darkening towards the tip of the tail and legs. Anyone know what they might have been? I thought they could be Pine Martens or something like that, but I then I thought they lived in warmer climates and were a bir more stoatlike in shape...

... Beech martens are noted for their habit of damaging cars by biting through ignition leads and brake hoses and pulling apart insulation boards ...

Thank goodness for that, I thought it might have been Satan's imps out to punish me for my misdeeds.
Sounds like I might have been gnawed to death. (note to self: don't wear rubber Y fronts next time...)

I saw one of these last year but thought it was just a ferret escaped from my nachbar's trousers

He from Yorkshire then is he?
Figgy
Would these be the creatures that I hear screeching in the middle of the night? Usually on warm summer nights - sounds almost like a crow caught up in a cat fight, but worse.

I fear so - blood-curdling sounds. We had a bunch of them in our area last Summer.

Actually it was No Angels practising for their last spot...! (Sorry, second last spot!)

@ Lavender - That must have been after midnight when the husbands "proper" have arrived home again!
