Coal heating for an apartment

What are the cons?? eg. warmth, smell, difficulty?

I haven't lived in an apartment with OH (Oven heating) yet, but going on the experiences of friends that have, I would say the main problem is coming home to a cold apartment after a hard day at work, and then having to start the fire and possibly fetch Coal from the basement beforehand. My prediction though is that with the effects of global warming really starting to kick in over the next few years, Berlin won't have many more of the extremely cold winters that it used to, so you could take a chance and save yourself a considerable wad of cash.

It also depends on where the coal is going to be stored. Some flats have a store cupboard thingy next to the front door where you will need to deposit a tonne of coal (or whatever) in one go once a year to keep the price down (normally the hottest time of the year). Make sure you are not on the fifth floor without a lift - unless you have enough friends willing to help you out as a chain gang
