I would like to buy a moped to get to and from work on, nothing too fancy, just an A to B'r and maybe the odd jaunt around town on the weekends. Anyone know of any good websites local to Munchkin that I can have a gander at? Only interested in a second, third hand scooter, looking to pay up to around 500. Also, anyone know where I can dump it when I go home. Not going to just leave it on the side of the road but if I cant sell it when I leave (cant be bothered) I just want to get rid of it. Might even make some teenagers day by just giving them the keys and saying "it's all yours, try not to kill yourself".
Cheers,
G

Personally I wouldn’t touch one of the Chinese "baumarkt roller" with a barge pole (the links that Allershausen posted)

I would recommend a Sfera 50 or anything made by Piaggio

The Baumarkt models are made in China. Many of the more famous European makes are now selling scooters made in China under there own name. This
Piaggio is made in China, the
Peugeot V-Clic is too and is identical to a baumarkt model and
Sachs, a old established
German company now make their scooters in China.

Friend of mine bought one of the cheap Chinese ones - seriously it's a death trap - the seat fell off last week - less than a year old.

I had a great little Korean Moppel for a few years but sadly neglected it after I got a car. Ran like the
wind, even with me and two crates of beer on it. Something like Samsung, I can't recall the name now. I sold it for parts to Motorwelt Hirschmann who deal in second hand
mopeds.

My brother used to say riding a moped is like boinking a fat girl. It's fun but you don't want your friends to see you on it.

My last motorcycle was a new 500 Honda, the first time I opened it up the footrest fell off. After 2 years the petrol tank split open and dripped petrol onto the hot engine. All things can and do have problems, it's country of manufacture is no guarantee.

I have been riding bikes for years, I just cant justify the money on a "real mans bike" for the lenght of time I am going to be here (plus the missus would have a fit if I blew 8K on a Ninga), it's mainly for the summer and up to the day I go home so I am not bothered, as long as it runs, gets me to work and I can leave it outside the flat safe in the knowledge that if some one nicks it I really couldnt care

.

It's only the English who say stuff like that

Yet when they go aboard it's all Vespas, manbags and moisturiser.
Ill check out the links that were posted. Many thanks...as for giving it away to some teenagers at the end, is that legal? I want to be green and all so leaving it on some back alley and buggering off is not something I want to do, anyone know any dodgy areas that I could leave it with the keys in knowing full well that it will be nicked and no Police report filed LOL or is that just dodgy?

Kind of hard to have wind in your
hair when you have to wear a helmet. Still, when you are done you can donate it to my wife, especially if it is a Vespa.

True lots of the major European manufacturers are building in China, thats why I reccomended the Sfera as its not
Sachs went bankrupt and mopeds are being made in China using the Sachs name - they arent Sachs mopeds
The baumarkt roller are in my opinion dangerous rubbish - I mean does anyone belive that a brand new moped for 600 € can be any good?
@ gandalex, if you have a full licence buy a Sfera 125 with the 2 stroke engine (price between 300 and 700)

If I can find a cheap ass Vespa than shes welcome to it LOL,
I used to ride a Honda something something in Thailand, it looked like something out of Quadrafina. Loads of mirrors, paid 300 for it, gave it away to one of the locals when I left, you should have seen his face!!!

Not cheap, but if you must ride on 50cc this is the way to travel:

One thing you may not be aware of and this could be important to you if you are used to a motorbike, these 50cc scooters are painfully slow. They max out at 45kph, so the traffic is always trying to overtake you. They're fine for teenagers who think its really fast compared to the pushbike they've been used to, but for anyone who's used to a motorcycle they are slow!

Nahhhhhhhhh - just get yerself a 60cc "big bore" kit and add some meths to the tank. Downhill you could be seeing 50 or 55 on the clock.
garlof
May 19 2008, 11:27 am
Agreed anything new is dangerously slow (restricted to 45kmh)
Another fact is the 125 is cheaper to run than a 50cc (if you have a Motorbike licence)
I pay 50 € Insurance for my 125 Vespa, my wife pays 60 Euros for her 50cc (via V-schild) - up to I think 150cc is Tax free

I live 2 and a half miles from work, I can walk it in 35 mins, even if I was doing 20kHm and hour I wouldn't care, I just want something with wheels that I can leave and forget about and the odd time stick the missus on the back and go for a jolly round the burbs... I have had everything from an MTX 50 (all the over 35's should remember that one from when they were 16) to my last baby which was a GSF1200, best bike ever!!!° In Asia I used to ride a load of Honda mopeds, love them, great fun although the paper mache helmets they give you are dodgy. Been looking at the sites and am going to enquire about this one...

Bloody hell, how hard is it to pick up a cheap bike here for under 500

. In London you can find them for dirt cheap, but then again you wouldnt be seen dead on one lol. Will have to have a look around then, is there an AutoTrader newspaper in Munich? I saw a big bike clothing shop near to Rosenheimer Place, where that guy burnt all the cars out lol, I will pop in and see if they know anything or can point me in the right direction.

The Sfera could be OK - take a look - fact is it doesnt start so 400€ is way too much - could be something could be nothing depends how comfortable you are in repairing it.
The prices for all 50cc have exploded the last couple of years especially Vespas (I used to buy and sell them - these days I just keep them locked up in the garage )
The reasons: the weather (especially this time of year), the price of petrol and the traffic in the city.
You can still find bargains but you have to be quick -. I bought a Vespa 50 for my wife here in TT for 250€ including 2 helmets runs like a dream but as I mentioned you have to be quick of the mark.

Not really, my Moppel did an easy 50kph, 60kph downhill with wind from behind. It's the fnücking car drivers who think, "Half as many wheels as I have, therefore half as fast" and zip past accordingly only to brake right in front of you when they realize they're speeding. Not to mention the times I got a free shower from some guy washing his windshield in front of me.

Nowadays, they are governed so that that they don't go above 45kph, obviously they go a bit quicker downhill, but in level flight 45kph is all they'll do, despite what it might say on the speedo! If you've been used to a proper bike not having the option to accelarate out of trouble is a pain.
