Cost of easyJet flights from Munich to Edinburgh

A rant about the high prices on this route

Has anyone else noticed that the prices have more than doubled since the route started?! Last autumn I was regularly paying 70-80 Euro when booked well in advance; the last one I booked cost 205 Euros when booked 3 months in advance, and this is without any of the 'extras' they offer. I note their Stansted flights are still cheap mad.gif

Is it me, or for a supposed budget airline, are Easyjet taking the **** (as usual). Not that there's much I can do about it!
MonksTown
Fuel is up, UK tax is up..
Easyjetmaybe a "budget" airline from its image but they want to make money.
If they can fill a plane with higer fares, they will.

I've always considered their Munich-Stansted flights relatively expensive, compared both to other Easyjet routes as well as the prices charged by Lufthansa. I guess the grass is always greener...

Bear in mind that Easyjet have a monopoly on the Munich-Edinburgh route, so they will inevitably charge a premium if the demand is there. To London, they compete with Lufthansa, British Airways and Air Berlin, which is always going to have the effect of driving prices down.

When you think about it, 205 euros for return flights to Scotland really isn't that bad. I think we've all just been spoiled by the super cheap flights in the last few years.

€205 for a Scot will always be painfull!! tongue.gif

certainly as opposed to 2 flights = 2 lots of taxes, loads of faff in between.

i regularly used to be more than that on 2 flights before the edin-mun route opened, i dont think its too bad!!

Exactly, it's their monopoly that drives the prices up. Mind you, I get really cheesed off at Edinburgh too, where they charge £1.74 for a litre of water (vs about 65p for 1.5L in a supermarket) in WH Smith because you can't take any through security. I think that's actually much more cheeky than the flight prices!

Incidentally, I'm not a Scot, my wife is; she still works & lives there. I used to have to fly Ryanair when I was in N Germany (lucky to have that!); Scotland's not an easy place to get to, unless you live in Arrecife or Malaga tongue.gif
MonksTown
Flying anywhere in the UK that is not London isn't easy from Munich as the demand isn't big enough.

In my cynical moments I reckon the likes of WHSmith nd Boots financed Osama Bin Liner to get themselves a long term monopoly on selling post security drinks.
seriously though, i'd have the Office of Fair trading down on them like a ton of bricks and not let them charge more than their high street stores do.

205 Euros iIS cheap. To go home for me flying from Glasgow to Basel usually costs more than £200. And there are no suitable/practical budget airlines for me to use.

When I first came to Germany in the early 80's, the cheapest scheduled flight to London from Munich was DM 606, that's approx €300. Plus you had to book at least 2 weeks in advance! The only other alternative was charter flights, which were hopelessly unreliable. You youngsters don't know you're born! tongue.gif

690.90 last weekend to get to Heathrow on BA. I had to pay it as work forgot to pay the for the ticket, they booked it, but didnt pay, and it wasnt even business class!!! 205 aint bad considering... Whats Air Berlin like for prices?

the official term is actually no frills I think - ie not necessarily budget

Easyjet is losing money at the moment...with a big loss announced a couple of weeks ago. Probably did not use a very good fuel hedging strategy:

QUOTE
Budget airline Easyjet has seen first-half losses more than treble as the price of oil soars.

For the six months to 31 March the firm made a loss of £57.5m, including £9.1m of costs from its purchase of GB Airways, against £17.1m a year ago.

Fuel costs in the April to September are set to increase by at least £45m, the airline added.
...
The price of jet fuel has risen 35% over the past three months and is now 80% higher than last year, Mr Harrison said.

Ahh, that's just down to poor planning! I've flown BA & Lufthansa to LHR for well under Euro 200- this year. I book Easyjet months in advance. I like Air Berlin, but no direct flts, so a bit of a non-starter when there's a direct service.

Once the wife moves out, this won't be an issue. I just think they are expensive for no frills; their website isn't no-frills, what with all the extras they nicely add-on for you! I like the way you can pay for Speedy Boarding and be on the Bus with everyone else rolleyes.gif TBH the exit seats are normally empty even if you're on the second bus... human cattle syndrome, dive in to the first empty seat laugh.gif

I like flying LH from T2; much nicer experience.
MonksTown
EXACTLY! People are enamoured of EasyCrap but I don't fancy paying them more than Lufty or BA to land in a cabbage field near Norwich.

It was about 5 marks to the pound back then, so that was 120 quid. I used to get return flights Stuttgart - Birmingham with Lufti for 80. So that was cheaper, but given the rate of inflation since probably more expensive in real terms.

Now that I do agree with.
What were we talking about again?

I think it was more like DM4,50 to the pound, but compared to what I earned then to what I earn now, it works out at about €750! I don't know how I ever afforded it!

I'm flying Easyjet to Edinburgh in August and I think it cost me a bit more than 210 per person. Plus its 15 Euros for every suitcase you want to check! And they try to sneak in travel insurance, you have to remove it before you check out. It wasn't much cheaper than KLM or BA -- but it was the only non-stop flight to Scotland. So there you go.
madgibson
My parents just used this route...they booked well in advance i.e. December and flew to MUC on 12th May for GBP 118 all in (incl. luggage charge). I think that's pretty cheap..having said that, it was booked 6mths in advance...they're pensioners and have nothing better to do than keep checking for cheap flights tongue.gif
