I have been a strict vegetarian for most of my life and am considering a move to Düsseldorf.
Can anyone offer any suggestions of vege-friendly places to eat out in the town, or any shops that sell food products aimed at vegetarians?
Thanks

When I read "vegetarian" and "aim" in the same sentence, my mind automatically thinks "rifle".

It's not difficult to be vegetarian in Düsseldorf - you'll usually find something you can eat in restaurants - especially if you go to somewhere which serves Italian, Lebanese, Chinese or Indian food. Obviously most German food is more meat-oriented.

Generally shopping is also pretty easy for vegetarians. There's far less pre-made food, so you're basically cooking more from the raw ingredients than you would in the UK. Fresh vegetables, fruit, pasta etc.

There's a great market on the Karlplatz which is well worth a browse.

Hi! Vegetarian here in Dortmund. Yeah, Germany is not the most vegetarian-friendly land when it comes to restaurants or finished products, but if there are shops here in Dortmund, than Düsseldorf shouldn't be that bad. Try the Reformhäuser. Many regular groceries, such as Real or upscale Edeka's have soy products. We have a coupla of Indian and Arabic restaurants that have a wide selection as well. Oh, and as an ex-infantryman, I automatically think on aiming and rifles when I hear idiot comments. dry.gif

Can't recommend anywhere in Düsseldorf but if you ever get to Bonn try eating in the Cassius Garten, it's opposite the Hauptbahnhof.

For veggie products, start by going shopping at a Reformhaus. My recommendation is to try the Vianna smoked tofu, there's also a wide enough range of veggie sausages, burgers and pate if that's what you are after. Supermarkets also sell stuff which is aimed at vegetarians but they don't put it in a separate section so have a good look everywhere, even in the cold meat counter.

Being a Vegetarian all my life, i can understand your problem. But, its not difficult to find vegetarian food in Germany. There´s a Vegetarian restaurant in Graf Adolf Platz just next to Subway, its quite easy to find. Apart from this, there´s a "Bio für Alle" super market near Kirch Platz (opp Aldi & Stern Verlag) where you will find lots of Veggie based ready made food (tofu based sausages, tofu wurst & so on). Apart from this, there are many indian restaurants in düsseldorf where you will always find good veggie dishes and Indian grocery stores (near the main station) which have a lot of veggie eatables. Just PM me when you further specific info.

Cheers,
Kaushik
