On auction at Bloomsbury Auctions in London today (Thursday, May 15, 2008) is a letter written by Albert Einstein to Eric B. Gutkind on 3rd January 1954.

The letter is written in German and is expected to fetch £6,000 to £8,000. A translated quote from the letter:

QUOTE (Albert Einstein)
The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish... . For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people

I wonder if AE ever tried developing a mathematical theory that disproved the existence of God? That would be worth a lot more smile.gif
Gen
Karl Popper already covered that aspect actually.

AE frequently described his search for a unified theory/equation as a quest for the mind of God. I'm not religious, nor am I attached to a particular view...but I don't think you can reduce AE's personal relationship to the universe to a proof or negation of one higher power. The search for some kind of explanation of the world seemed to be an important theme in his life.

Maybe, but what it does show you is that one of the most brilliant minds to ever walk upright on the planet thought that God and religion was bollocks.
Editor Bob
Yes, that was indeed my primary purpose in posting this. To point out to anyone who had not yet figured it out for themselves, God and all religions are in fact complete bollocks. It beggars belief that today, in 2008, anyone still believes in such "childish supersitions".

Yesterday I posted that the expected sale price was around £8,000. In fact it was sold for £170,000 to an anonymous private collector. Apparently extra phone lines had to be installed to cope with interest from around the world. Telegraph article: Albert Einstein letter sells for a record £170,000

Albert is probably looking down from above and wondering why he ever stuck his tongue out for that photo shot.

Um...but then again I guess he isn't 'cos there is no hell below us, above us only sky.
the_cat
No. This is actually a shot from later in his career when he decided to become an inventor. He is demonstrating to the patent officer what it is that he has invented. We came to know it as simply "the tongue". Just think, without AE you would not be able to taste food, make rude gestures, or even have the ability to form basic speech patterns. Apparently, he was puzzled that nobody had thought to register the patent sooner, as was the patent office... what a guy!

laugh.gif That thought goes through my mind every time I see that mug shot.

To get a better insight into the great man's mind, here's a comprehensive collection of Einstein quotes, many of them about God and religion. A few examples:

QUOTE
"Subtle is the Lord, but malicious He is not."
Remark made during Einstein's first visit to Princeton University. (April 1921).
When asked what he meant by this he replied. "Nature hides her secret because of her essential loftiness, but not by means of ruse." (Die Natur verbirgt ihr Geheimnis durch die Erhabenheit ihres Wesens, aber nicht durch List.)

QUOTE
"I have second thoughts. Maybe God is malicious."
Quoted in Jamie Sayen, Einstein in America (1985). Said to Vladimir Bargmann, with the meaning that God leads people to believe they understand things that they actually are far from understanding.

QUOTE
"I believe in Spinoza's God, Who reveals Himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God Who concerns Himself with the fate and the doings of mankind."
In response the telegrammed question of New York's Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein in (24 April 1929): "Do you believe in God? Stop. Answer paid 50 words." Einstein replied in only 25 (German) words.

QUOTE
"What humanity owes to personalities like Buddha, Moses, and Jesus ranks for me higher than all the achievements of the enquiring and constructive mind. What these blessed men have given us we must guard and try to keep alive with all our strength if humanity is not to lose its dignity, the security of its existence, and its joy in living."
Written statement (September 1937) as quoted in Albert Einstein, The Human Side: New Glimpses From His Archives (1981) edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman ISBN 0691023689

And the source of one of his most famous quotes, often rendered as "God does not play dice":

QUOTE
"Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the 'old one'. I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice."
Letter to Max Born (4 December 1926)

There's much more in the link - well worth a browse.

It's very comforting to me that one of the greatest minds in the history of the human race belives that the stories in the Bible are childish.

I'm sure the good people of Chernobyl will find this quote from Einstein comforting then:

QUOTE
"There is not the slightest indication that [nuclear energy] will ever be obtainable. It would mean that the atom would have to be shattered at will."

And don't overlook this one:

QUOTE
"In view of such harmony in the cosmos which I, with my limited human mind, am able to recognise, there are yet people who say there is no God. But what makes me really angry is that they quote me for support of such views."
(Statement to German anti-Nazi diplomat and author Prince Hubertus zu Lowenstein around 1941, as quoted in his book Towards the Further Shore : An Autobiography (1968) )

(Both quotes from this list, which is a real treasure trove. Yes, I know, it's Wiki, bla bla, but sources are given.)

And as noted on the Bloomsbury Auctions page:

QUOTE
Although Einstein emphatically rejected conventional religion, he was affronted when his views were appropriated by atheists, whose lack of humility he found offensive.

It wouldn't take Einstein to prove Mary wasn't a virgin.

Good to have the owner of the site off the fence.

If one wishes to compare scientist dick size to back up your own particular view of the "God" topic ,you'll find yourself seriously outmatched however :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton

QUOTE
...His Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, is said to be the greatest single work in the history of science...

In a 2005 poll of the Royal Society asking who had the greatest effect on the history of science, Newton was deemed much more influential than Albert Einstein.[5]

Although the laws of motion and universal gravitation became Newton's best-known discoveries, he warned against using them to view the universe as a mere machine, as if akin to a great clock. He said, "Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done."[18]

Great! Now both God and Einstein are angry! Way to go. mad.gif

The problem is the very simple equation that proves you can never disprove God.

False & False = True

QUOTE
"I'm not an atheist and I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangements of the books, but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God."-Albert Einstein

How childish!

And said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. - Jesus

Childish is believing in invisible sky gods, something that Einstein most certainly did not believe in..

Nice to have some live principles there wink.gif

Spinoza's "substance" is the way to go. A better moniker for god or nature.

It's the old argument concerning the rejection of organised religion for a belief system that interprets the universe in an adult fashion, without rejecting the possibility of powers at work that outstrip our meagre understanding. Einstein saw that, which was why atheists pissed him off. He believed in a god but rejected God.

Only the weak of mind can't make up their own mind and need some"body" to do it for them. To allow a system that has systematically lied, raped and pillaged the world for the last 1,500 years to make these decisions is, well, at best amusing and at worst a prime example of the fallibility of humans and their inherent ability to believe bullshit.

God is dead; long live god (or substance;))
