Life on Dirschauer Straße in Friedrichshain

Feedback on what the neighbourhood is like

I'm considering buying a studio apartment in this area; I wonder if anybody would be able to let me have any insider knowledge about this particular part of Friedrichshein?

Many thanks

I live in Niederbarnimstrasse, which is just around the corner - and I love the area. Especially if you fancy going out to have a drink or something to eat, it´s marvellous. Because this is an area with plenty of small cafes, pubs, and restaurants. It should be enough to say that Simon Dach-Strasse and Boxenhagener Platz is just around the corner. If you have a bike it´s also really easy to get to the cooler parts of Kreuzberg, and Mitte is just five minutes away with the U5. Other than that, it´s still lots of punks in the neighbourhood, but according to locals the Prenzlauer Berg-crowd is slowly taking over, due to rising rents. I don´t really know much about this, though, so don´t take my word for it.

I lived on that street for 2 months when I first moved to Berlin. It was down by Revelarstr (sp?). I liked how it was quiet etc., but could walk a block and get to the bars. It is changing but still plenty of broken bottles and broken windows on public phones each Monday morning. If you buy go for the longer term, 2+ years...don't buy for just 6 months.

I would live there if I was single. The average age was below 30 at night. The families were moving in, and in good Berlin style everyone let everyone be. I didn't see any issues.

Good luck!

Thank you both for your replies. I think I'll probably go ahead then and fork out the cash, since it seems a place that is easy to live in.

All the best. biggrin.gif

I live in the next street and Dirschauer Straße is in fact a nice thing: One of the quietest streets in one of the liveliest areas in Berlin. No bar or restaurant in the very small street, but some hundred in the area. two good fashion shops around the corner, some colourful houses in the street. If you can cope with the free running dogs (and the free running dogshit), some punks/alternative people and many families around, it will be your area. As we searched for a new flat some year ago, we also visited one in Dirschauer Straße, quiet nice, maybe a little bit too dark. Back then it was a bit more than 500 euro (including everything) for ~65m²

I agree with what Toby say above, it is a nice quiet street in one hell of a great area. A great place to live, not maybe for families and parking can be difficult as with all of F/Hain. Otherwise great public transport connections.

Fantastic! I'm so pleased with the follow up from Toby and Deccie, since before it came in I had just phoned my lawyer and said 'Go for it!'. So, hey, I'm going to have an apartment in what seems to be a really good location biggrin.gif Also, huge sigh of relief!!
