This weekend is gonna be another great one, so what better way to enjoy the sun than by hanging out at a Baggersee or outdoor swimming pool? Post your suggestions here, but it would be great if you put in BOLD the nearest, largest town if it is not obvious.

Here are some of my favorites in the Rhein Neckar triangle (MA, HD, LU).

Naturfreibad Blies (Große Blies)
Wollstraße , Ludwigshafen
How to get there: Last summer I always went by bike, but there is a bus to Große Blies.

Stollenwörthweiher
Rheingoldstraße 204, Mannheim
How to get there: Tram 7 towards "Rheingoldhalle - Endstelle" (10 min from MA train station via Lindenhof)

EDIT: Just found this link to lakes in Germany. Found a recommendation for the Blaue Adria, 2 km SW of LU and MA. I think I'll give it a try this weekend.

My oldtime favourites:

Freizeitbad Tiergarten
Tiergartenstr. 13, Heidelberg
Bus Line 31 or 32 to Studentenwohnheime (2 mins walk, just around the corner), or Tram line 21 or 24 to Technologiepark and Bus line 37 from there to Schwimmbad
Note: Open Air Movie Theater next-door during summer in the evenings; Schwimmbad-Musik-Club next door.

Freizeitzentrum Hardtsee
Ubstadter Seeweg, Ubstadt-Weiher (north of Bruchsal)
10 minutes from S-Bahn station Ubstadt-Weiher (lines S3/S4).
Note: just outside VRN area (next station).

Badesee Heddesheim
An der Fohlenweide 7, Heddesheim
Tram Line 4 to Heddesheim Station (from MA/LU) or Tram Line 5 to Großsachsen OEG Station (from HD), Bus Line 630 from either to Sportzentrum Heddesheim.
Note: Huge. 200,000 m² water, 50,000 m² land area. Opens again like this week or so.

Anyone been to the Rhine swimming areas, in particular the Strandbad near Reiß-Insel in Mannheim? Opinions? Somehow, swimming just opposite of one of the biggest inland harbours in Europe doesn't appeal to me...

I just got back from the Blaue Adria in Altrip (Rheinland Pfalz), just a few km southwest of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim (doable by bike, 6 km or so). We drove from Mannheim via the Altrip ferry (4 Euro for a car & 2 people). Fantastic sandy bank, ass cold water, but lots of space to spread out and relax. There is a little island in the middle of the lake, which is FKK tolerated. I took a little stroll and had to pass by 4 old, naked men with shriveled penises playing boccia. They were brown everywhere. Ew...

There is a little kiosk where you can buy fries and currywurst, drinks and ice cream.

Wikipedia entry. There is a huge camping area adjacent to the lake. Parking costs something, but entry to the lake is free.

I would not recommend the Strandbad in Mannheim near Lindenhof and Neckarau. It is a huge meadow, with overcrowded barbecuing and large extended families all hanging out, being loud and rowdy. It is also free, so that might explain a lot. The beach area is rocky, not very pretty, but it runs along a large promenade, which quite a few people were biking along.

You should also not swim in the Rhein - the current was pretty strong.

has anyone got any input on Carl-Benz-Bad?

As my aquafitnes/jogging trainer is doing a course there over the summer and i wondered what the pool is like?
