Germany: Three children found dead in freezer

QUOTE(CNN)
Police say the bodies of three children have been found inside a freezer in the basement of a house in Germany.

Few details have been released about the grisly find in Olpe, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, including how old the children were and whether they had perished before being placed in the freezer.

Police plan to release more information about the incident, including whether anyone has been charged, at a press conference later.

The bodies of three babies have been found in a basement freezer in the town of Wenden, in western Germany, prosecutors have said.

A woman believed to be the mother of the three has been arrested, a state prosecutor's office spokesman said.

What is it about these Europeans? Belgian cages, Austrian dungeons, German freezers. Die haben bestimmt einen Knall...

The world is full of horrible stories, it is not just a German phenomena.

And having read rick de's post I don't think people in glass houses should throw stones.

Edit: I thought rick was American, (he should be with a name like Rick)

Infanticide has a 3-4 times more chance of happening in the former GDR state. in the last 2 weeks 2 separate incidents where new born babies found dead in Saxony.

Spiegel Article

QUOTE
The latest case came to light in western Germany, but many child killings have happened in the formerly communist east, prompting one politician to sugest recently that infanticide may be the legacy of East Germany's communist rule.

Wolfgang Böhmer, governor of the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, faced opposition calls to resign (more...) after he said women in the east had "a more casual approach to new life" than in the west.

Böhmer, who trained as a gynaecologist, was responding to research showing that the risk of a baby being killed by its mother is three to four times higher in the east than it is in the west of Germany.

Terrible things happen everywhere. In China and India, female fetus are aborted. In India and Afghanistan, young wives are often set on fire when their families refuse to pay more dowry and cast off by the husbands' families if they survive.

The worst case I remember from the US is the woman who strangled a pregnant woman and then cut her open to retrieve the baby she then passed as hers.

Germany does not have a monopoly on babies in freezers, Austria is not infested by incestuous jailors, Belgium is not the only country inhabited by pedophiles.

I don't know what it is that drives mothers to hide their pregnancies and fathers to ignore them. Giving birth can be a traumatic experience, some women in extreme circumstances cannot cope with the fact that a stranger has entered their life, generally unwanted, and take the shortest and easiest way out.

No matter how much sex ed you receive in school, nothing prepares you for the reality of being a parent. Slowly, Germany is catching on to this, my daughter had mandatory parenting classes the year of her graduation.

Even though it may be the mother who killed or neglected the new-borns, she didn't conceive them through divine intervention. I think any father involved should stand trial as well, either for aiding and abetting the mother, not informing the authorities of children's births and deaths or just plain stupidity for not realizing she was pregnant or innate cussedness for threatening to leave her if she had any children (it's been done).

Am I starting to get boring if I mention the TT mantra that 'only parents should comment here as only they understand what its like to put kids in a freezer'

bit of a slippery slope though isn't it? I agree wholeheartedely that people should think a lot harder and be together for a decent length of time (>5 years at least?) before even thinking about having kids. But if you are going to put the guy on trial too (of course if he aided it then he should be on trial) for basically leaving/threatening to leave etc etc, then surely you should prosecute all the parents that split up when their children are young, if the children end up committing a crime, having social problems etc etc

That's not fair, only divorced or separated parents are allowed to enter that debate.

You mean only divorced and separated parents are capable of putting kids in a freezer? Ok, sorry for that bad joke. tongue.gif

No, honey, this one:

So to prevent children from commiting a crime or social problems, simply put them in a freezer? ph34r.gif

She probably put the bodies in the freezer because she did not know what recyling bin she was meant to use.
Cestrian
There was a story recently of bodies turning up in bins - absolutely disgusting. Babies should be put in the BIO-MÜLL, not the normal bins...
