Hi,

My husband has finally convinced me to go camping and we plan to go for a short 1 night trip next week. We were thinking of going to the Baltic Sea, as it's not too far from Berlin and we've been meaning to head out there anyway. Can anyone recommend some good camping sites near there?

Thanks
MrNosey
Have never been camping on the Ostsee but here are some links:

I have been on holiday around Schwaan and it is nice countryside and there is plenty to do in the area, if you've got a car (maybe also take your bikes) to get around.

Thanks for that, I'll try those links out. We don't have a car and were thinking of going on the OstSee Ticket - we're only going for 1 night - to see if I cope (!) but if I like it, the plan is to do a longer trip with our bikes too.
Thanks again

I would recommend visitng Schönberg and Laboe near Kiel. It's a lovely area and there's plenty to do there. You can rent bicycles and do a very beautiful bike ride right along the coast.

Otherwise, I had a student from Rostock once who said it was very nice up there, but I've never made it there for a visit myself.

Its indeed very nice there, at the moment (as I was around those places since a couple of days - til yesterday). The weather's so good and its green everywhere with all the yellow flowers blooming. Its very good for biking around or doing any other ourdoor activities.

I can 2nd this, we are having excellent weather right now!!!

I know there is a camping site somewhere by Hohe Düne, on the east side of the Warnow and Rostock. It is situated in the Rostock Heide. It is called Markgrafheide. I was there walking a couple of weeks ago.

http://www.m-vp.de/2258/index.htm - The Baltic Camping and Freizeitpark is the Markgrafheide.
there is also Ostseecamp rostocker heide...I don'T know if either have tent places as my German is rough, but if they take campers/Rv's I would think tents.

I can recommend Stubbenfelde on the island of Usedom. Haven't camped there but we've rented their funky log cabins twice. The setting is beautiful, you're surrounded by beech trees and are only a short walk from miles and miles of white, sandy beach. The campground is fairly big and the place never really feels too crowded or overrun, even during peak season. Plenty of outdoor stuff to do on the island. We just rented bikes and cycled all over the place.

Usedom is lovely and you can travel by train from Berlin quite easily. Use the Ostsee-Ticket to Züssow on the mainland and then get onto the Usedom-Bäderbahn. Unfortunately, train travel on Usedom isn’t included in the Ostsee-Ticket so you'll need to purchase separate tickets on the Bäderbahn. The Stubbenfelde campsite is only a couple hundred yards from the train stop.

Hi guys,
Just back from our trip and we had a great time with great weather (albeit a tad cold yesterday). We ended up going to Binz and staying at Camping Meier (http://www.camping-meier-ruegen.de/), which was very reasonable and had great facilities.
Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I'm doing a similiar trip next week - cycling and camping from Hamburg up to Rügen over 4 days, am very excited! Have heard it can get nippy though - how cold does it get in the evenings?

Also do you get mosquito problems up there?

When we went last year the first day was beautiful, but it did get very cold in the evening and the next day too. I can't say what the temp was but we were in shorts and t-shirts and a fleece jumper each and froze. We ended up sitting in a Strandkorb to shelter from the wind and enjoy the sun - very pleasant it was too. If you're going for a reasonable amount of time, I'd pack long trousers and layers, that way if it's warm you can strip down and if it's cold bulk up. I don't remember mossies being a problem, but my hay fever was bad. Have fun though

It has been between 6-13 degree's lately. We have had the windows open for weeks now at night. I think last night was around 9 degree's. I know on Rügen it is generally a little cooler than here around Rostock. Once the sun goes down it gets considerably cooler. The wind is what makes it a lot cooler.

The mosquito's aren't so bad but when you are running or hiking and stop, they like to attack. Bug spray wouldn't be a bad idea, at least if you are planning to bike through Rostocker Heide.

Thanks for all the pointers Amber and spacecadet, it does sound rather chilly up there - only came here with a suitcase so don't have lots of appropriate equipment but will try to get boyfriend to fly over with an extra fleece or two... And get a few bits and bobs over the weekend.

And will get bugspray! It's that Schafskälte isn't it.
