Science Daily: We Are Programmed To Resist Weight Loss

Research confirming the human body is designed to strongly resist attempts to lose weight will be presented at an international gathering of obesity experts hosted by QUT this week.

No it isn't hard to lose weight for everyone. I've lost 6 kg since February 1st simply by not eating chocolate or ice cream any more, and not having a midnight snack when coming home from the afternoon shift. Cutting down the booze helps too.

If you're looking for a quick solution or an easy one, you won't find it when it comes to losing weight. It's not easy, but not impossible either.

Weight loss is no secret. Increase exercise and shoot for loosing no more than 2lbs a month without changing your diet just the amount of exercise. Your diet will automatically change over time as you will begin to crave what your body actually needs. I lost 50lbs doing that, but I increased my exercise time by about 90mins per day over a two year period. I started off every 2nd or 3rd day doing two hours of bicycling, rollerblading or going to the gym. It wasn't long before my body craved exercise everyday. Word of warning, don't do the stair stepper for 30 minutes without building up to it. I couldn't even walk home after thinking I beat the stair master! Fortunately, I got a good female friend to come over and massage my three legs that night to relieve the pain.

When my jeans start feeling a little tight, I have a very simple method to lose the weight. I cut my portions by about a quarter, no more second deserts, avoid late night snacking (or switch to fruit and cheese) and cut down on alcohol. Also increase exercise by perhaps half an hour a day - simple stuff like a longer walk with the dogs. I don't actually watch my weight, but just go by how my clothes fit. Seems cheaper than buying a whole new wardrobe in a larger size, and doesn't require a lot of effort to maintain the same size. Been the same size now since I lost a whole bunch of weight when I was a chubby 18 year old. Back then I was almost hitting 180 lbs and the family doc put the fear of God into me. Lost 45 lbs and although I've never been a skinny model, I've maintained my size easily since then. I honestly have no clue how much I weigh now since I don't obsess about weight. Size is what matters to me.

My wife could lose eighteen pounds of ugly fat just by cutting off her head.

Losing weight is not difficult, it's actually quite easy. It's just that most people don't have a clue or have the willpower to do so. 30 mins of proper exercise 4 or 5 days a week and proper nutrition is all that is needed. The body requires x amount of calories per day and to lose weight you need to eat about 500 less than this per day, 1000 max. More than that and the body goes into what is called starvation mode. This is where is will hold on to the fat and resist attempts to lose it. This is why you will hear so many people who try to starve themselves thin saying, "oh but i lost 8 kilos the last few weeks and it's stopped" and they just give up!

I think y'all missing the point here. It's like saying stopping smoking is really easy - just don't light another cigarette.

Even the dumbest 200 kilo lardarse fuckwit understands that by eating less and doing more exercise he will lose weight.

The issue of course is sticking to a regime of lower calories and more exercise. The article that started the thread is only commenting on the the body having
some resistance to losing weight - but sure as cream eggs is cream eggs we all know if you eat less you will lose weight.

Interesting thread!

Neil is my ex-supervisor from many years ago - great scientist too...

well done to those lucky buggers who have lost weight and kept it off - but, in my opinion sustainable weight loss is the hard part.

i'm interested in what people actually do in order to prevent body weight regain over long periods of time - or are we a nation of "yo-yo" dieters?

Dieting is a major factor in becoming morbidly obese. I saw a documentary on obesity in Germany and a doctor who performs stomach surgery said patients get so fat by trying to diet all the time! After you go off a diet, you gain back what you lost plus at least ten percent.

And I definitely agree with Johnny English when he compares losing weight to quitting smoking. It's not easy,

The problem with some people when it comes to losing weight is that they cut down to too few calories per day. Then, when they up the calories back to a "normal" amount...say...1600 for women and 2200 for men, they gain all of this weight back because their body was being starved. The body just grabs onto the calories.

Been there, done that. Now what I'm doing is "eating more" (was 1350, now 1500) and still losing, but when I go away for the weekend, I don't pack on all the pounds because I eat a bit more. Been there, done that as well.

Losing weight can be a bitch.

It's easier if you try to lose weight with a partner though. That way you can encourage and motivate each other.

Actually me and 3 friends started a blog as a 4 person support group.. it's a great laugh and really helps when you read how others are getting along...

revisiting an old thread...
I know carbs are bad for me, but can't stop eating them these days. Any suggestions?

So see a doctor for a check.
Seriously.
Craving (simple) carbs can be a symptom of an underactive thyroid or indeed of insulin resistance and potentially type II diabetes, if in combination with other symptoms.
Have a google and see if you need to get this checked. That's if it isn't greed, of course

Try eating high fiber foods that are low carb. Beans, lentils are a great filling low fat food they are high fiber the net carb or digestible carb which is supposed to be better for you. I thought no food was really "bad", except the amount consumed.

Katrina has a good advice too. Germany has a lot of lovely carbs to crave though and passing the backerei is hard to do.
