Easy day hike from Klais to Mittenwald - Munich

Sunday 4.May.2008
Izz
Hiking season has started! Unfortunately I am not fit at all (I was a lazy couch potato in winter) so I am looking for some people who would like to join me for an easy hike. The hike is more or less in the valley, not up and down the mountains, and takes us from Klais (near Garmisch-Partenkirchen) to Mittenwald through very nice scenery. There are at least two possibilities for food/drink on the way (I can´t remember exactly how many). The hike itself is about 5 hours -so 6 for me :-)). I would suggest to take the regional train to Klais from Munich, we could share a Bayernticket which makes it really inexpensive. Five people can travel on one ticket. Meeting point 9.15 in front of the Internationale Presse at Hauptbahnhof (train leaves at 9.32). I will be there a bit earlier to organize tickets if needed. Yes, this is early but it takes 1.40 hours to get there - and I am sure the sunshine will be worth it! :-)) Coming back some time in the early evening, depending on when we catch the train back from Mittenwald.
Anyone who is up for the first look at the mountains this year is welcome to come along! Just add yourself to the list.

Would we be back by 7, you think? I have tickets to the comedy club at 8...
Izz
Not sure... I can´t promise it- it all depends on the breaks we take, how long we hang out in the sun or in a cafe on the way or how long we have to wait for the next train back to Munich (they do leave every hour but last time we just missed it and had to wait)...

I'm in. This sounds like fun, and I need the sun and exercise.

I am new to Munich and not familiar with Hauptbahnhof , please can you tell me where is Internationale Presse. I will be reaching Hauptbahnof by S-Bahn.
Izz
The international Press is a little bookshop in between a bakery and the ticket center, inside the train station. It is hard to miss. Coming from the S-Bahn just follow the signs to the exit and DB (Deutsche Bahn = Hauptbahnhof) to the trains. If you can actually see the rails, then you are on the right way! :-) PM me and I can give you my number in case you can´t find us.

And everybody, don´t forget sunglasses, sunscreen and water! (Oh, I sound like my mom...)

A friend just told me that he is coming along, so it is

Okay so next question: what should I bring? since there are some drink spots along the way do I need a water bottle or can I probably go without? I'm asking because I don't have a small backpack - have to go buy one if I need it. Thanks.

Sorry for replying so late to your backpack question! Yes, there are spots on the way, at least two restaurants/cafes but the hike is 5 hours. If that is good enough for you, then you don´t need one. I always bring a water bottle because I am a thirsty camel. :-) I would recommend bringing one- can´t you just take a small bag or anything? Or we just share a small backpack? Don´t worry, we won´t let you die of thirst! :-)))

Hi all - here are my photos from the hike. I resized them a bit to cut the file size down. If anyone wants full-resolution let me know and I can send it. The file below is 30 megabytes and is about 53 photos.

PS - I didn't see any posts by Izz organizing another hike this weekend, but there is one on Sunday afternoon. Anyone interested in going? Countryside ramble from Kirchseeon to Aying

Just decided that I will organize another hike on Sunday, tomorrow... :-))))

Whoops - on the download link, the .zip I added is a mistake. Just follow the link normally in your web browser instead of trying to do "Save as...". It leads to a webpage that WILL give a download link. I used MediaFire to host the file.
