I've got a new computer and thus far haven't been able to get the audio to work despite installing all the drivers. I've gone through the trouble shooter, but I don't really understand what I'm supposed to do... I need a computer yoda to guide me. Can anyone help?

have you checked to make sure the sound is turned on/up using the audio control panel?

new computer
...is a little too generic. Make/model, what operating system and which sound card is installed would be a start.
IF Windows do you see the speaker icon in the bottom right (without the red mute symbol on top)?

May sound dumb, but also make sure your speakers are plugged in to the appropriate spot. A friend spent hours trying to get sound, and I found he had plugged in the speakers where the mic should go

A new computer...
PC with Gill Bates best OS?? or Linux..
iMac with fries
ZX Spectrum with rubber keys...
Some details may be helpful, as the force is never strong with me just before a holiday, however I have noticed after 3 quick maß even I can be controlled by the Jedi mindtrick...damm
Assuming a windows PC & you've checked in the system for 'this device is working properly' & the audio setting are not muted, and you've put headphones in the right socket... then it sounds a bit more complicated.
However in recent months people who have bought a PC with an ATI 3XXX, have had such a problem as their motherboard supports Dolby Digital live as does the graphics card. This is one case where installing all the drivers means no sound, but I'm guessing...
So details or please PM if you got it from ALDI, E-PLUS, etc.

Do you have one of those computer that you have to speak to it, instead of it speaking to you?

If the sound subsystem is onboard, make sure it's enabled in the BIOS.

So I am not the ONLY one with this problem. I have Vista home basic installed. I can listen to music, but when I use the microphone with yahoo msn or Skype, I can hear the people I call, but they can't hear me. I have the latest drivers installed. In Control Panel-> Hardware, When I looked for updates I got the message that the latest drivers are already installed. What else can I check? Someone, please help. I am going deaf.

@seeking
How many microphone inputs does your PC have?

There is one in the front panel, one each for the pink and the green cables. These are plugged in. Since I am able to listen to music, I know that I have installed correctly.
I checked everything and finally got to record my voice and play it back. This I managed, after I tried various options in the Sound part of Control Panel.
I then played with the options in Skype and passed the test call. I got it right on yahoo msn, too, but this was never a problem. I finally got it to work, although now the 'sound record' function does not seem to work, but I do not need this now.
All is well that ends well.
